Description:
A French company has developed a new concept of gravity base foundation. The system is dedicated to monopile foundation for offshore wind turbines.

Today, monopile is the main system used for offshore wind turbine foundation. The installation of monopile can be questionable in case of rocky seabed or in case of lack of competence of the soil. The proposed system mixes gravity base structure with monopile.

The system is a gravity foundation based on an optimized combination of monopile and concrete caisson with a patented smart connection. The concrete base is floating and so it is transferred to sea with an elevator barge and towed to site. Then, the base is lowered by the water ballasting.

The steel monotube is also a floating structure (horizontally or vertically). It´s lowered by water ballasting. The bottom of the monotube is a cone, adapted to fit in the dedicated conic place into the gravity base. The cone bottom touches down so the gravity base.

To ensure the global stability, the French company offers an innovative connection. Packer sectors are provided at bottom and top of the steel cone. These packers are protected by rings during the towing and the lowering.

The bottom packer is inflated with grout.
In a second step, hydraulics jacks are used for the levelling of the monotube on the top of gravity base. Once the monotube is well stabilized, the top packers are inflated with grout. The hydraulic jacks can now be removed.

In case of harsh environmental conditions, the concrete base could be filled in with sand to improve the foundation stability.

The smart connection, with its conic form and its packer sectors locations, improves the resistance of the foundation and so limits the cracking of the concrete. Thus, the French concept allows a simplified decommissioning.

The French company is looking for industrial partners in the marine renewable energy sector.
These partners should be developpers of offshore wind farms, or tidal stream solutions with specific needs in a dedicated suitable foundation. A technical cooperation agreement is proposed, following specifications.
Designers of fixed foundations would also be interested in the proposed solution and a licence agreement could be proposed.

The system is a low cost gravity base foundation with:
- simple design to construct
- limited use of tug boats and/or installation barges, allowing so minimum marine operations
- limited quantity of grout to connect the monotube to the gravity base structure
- simplified decommissioning
- limiting the risks of cracking in the grouted connection
