Energy saving smart power cutting switch for domestic electric appliances
A UK-based product development startup has developed a patent-pending sensory-based electronic switch that automatically cuts off the power supply to domestic electrical appliances by considering the operational characteristics and constantly monitoring the operational state of the appliance in use - the sensory-based logic resides in each electrical appliance. Manufacturers of household electrical equipment are sought to license the technology and test incorporation into their own products.
Households account for 30% of energy consumption which suggests that energy conservation should first start at home. The main contributing factor to household energy wastage is that the main decision to turn on or off many electrical appliances is still taken by humans. In certain situations, humans operate electrical appliances such as irons, vacuum cleaners, hair-driers, kettles and can easily leave them unattended often when distracted. This act can lead to significant energy wastage. The company described here has developed an automated solution to cut-off power when required through a smart context-aware mechanism.

Each variant of the electronic switch in the product described operates based on the actual operational characteristics and operational states of each electrical appliance. The product employs a combination of appropriate low-cost sensors that are able to decide when to act upon reception of a signal. Given that the operational characteristics of different appliances vary, 3 switch variants have been developed that can apply to 3 different sets of power hungry household appliances. By intelligently passing the burden on to sensory-based machine-learning solutions, the human decision to turn off an appliance is not required. This results in improved energy-saving and the minimisation of fire-hazards caused by unattended equipment.

The UK product development startup seeks manufacturers of household electrical goods to license and potentially integrate the technology into their products.
Advantages and Innovations:
Some existing products require humans to continuously press a mechanical switch that may cut off power unnecessarily when not intended. The main benefit of the use of this technology is the ability to automatically cut power in a smart manner by considering operational characteristics of each electrical product. This feature does not exist in other products on the market currently.
Energy savings and the decreased occurrence of household incidents involving electrical goods are also a key benefit.
