Summary:
A Spanish research centre with a long-term experience in the development of nanocarriers based on metal nanoparticles supported on different inorganic matrices and their application in coatings would like to join consortia to participate in proposals for the topic "Antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal nanocoatings" (RIA) HORIZON-CL4-2021-RESILIENCE-01-02 or another research collaborations under a research partnership agreement.
Description:
Since 2009 one of the research interests of the center is focused on the development of inorganic antimicrobial materials, particularly:
· Silver/Copper nanoparticles attached to an aluminosilicate matrix. They show a consistent microbial reduction rate [3 log (> 99.9%)] against a broad range of bacteria under different antimicrobial tests, which it´s attributed to the release of Ag or Cu.
· Glass/nAg and Glass/nCu. Silver or copper nanoparticles embedded in a glass glasses with a wide range of formulations. They show a consistent microbial reduction rate [3 log (> 99.9%)] against a broad range of bacteria under different antimicrobial tests The broad biocidal activity of these glass/metal particles is attributed to the synergistic effect of Ag and Ca2+ release.
Both materials show an intrinsic and long-lasting antimicrobial efficacy and allow a controlled-release kinetic of the nanoparticles.
The research performed on this topic has resulted in more than 30 publications and 4 patents.
Apart from having access to all the equipment and techniques required for the synthesis and characterization of antimicrobial materials, the center has a Microbiology Biosafety Level 2 Lab specialized in unconventional areas of microbiology such as antimicrobial efficacy studies of surfaces, medical devices, plastics, fibres and fabrics, among others. It also performs analysis of antimicrobial preservatives used in cosmetics, paints and food.
The center is looking for research partners in order to build proposals or participate in consortia mainly for the Horizon Europe topic of Cluster 4 "Antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal nanocoatings" (RIA) HORIZON-CL4-2021-RESILIENCE-01-02, although other European programmes and research collaborations may also be considered. A research partnership agreement is envisaged.
Advantages and Innovations:
The research center is focused on the development of safe and environmentally friendly antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-fungal materials following two different approaches: 1) innovative glass compositions with a proven wide range of antimicrobial activity and 2) metal nanoparticles supported on aluminosilicate nanocarriers or embedded in soda-lime glasses.
Unlike common organic biocides, the materials developed by the research center feature:
· Long life
· Low toxicity
· High heat resistance
Nanoparticles are evenly distributed within the matrix of the composites or the surfaces of the nanocarriers so agglomeration is avoided and the antimicrobial activity is enhanced.
Coatings with these materials have been successfully applied to glass, ceramic and metal substrates.
