An electronic Greek SME specialized in the design of protocol converters, using embedded technology, has developed various products based on synchro technology, like transformers, NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) converters, shaft angle indicator, sensor receiver / transmitter (with input range 4-20 mA) as well as synchro to digital and resolver to digital converters.

The function of the Synchro to digital and the Resolver to digital converter is, as the name suggests, converting three-wire synchro or four-wire resolver information into digital format. One of the most important features of a tracking converter is that it is ratiometric in operation. This means the angular error signal generated to null the loop is only dependant upon the ratio of the sine and cosine signals and not their absolute electrical value.

A resolver is an electro-mechanical transformer, whose analog output voltages are a function of shaft angle. It is, therefore, an absolute position transducer, providing true angular information at any time power is applied.

The synchro to digital converter is used for a number of applications in the aerospace, shipping and marine industry (Signal converter of gyrocompass and speedometer), robotics, control surface position pickup, azimuth and elevation drives, linearity, compass repeater, log speed repeater, roll, pitch, and angle indicator. The converter is also used to determine the position of an actuator or torque motor position and to convert signals to a digital output corresponding to the shaft angle and / or velocity.

The module is a real time tracking converter and accepts synchro input 90V L-L. The maximum resolution is two min arc. Input reference is 115 V, 400 Hz sinusoidal. Extra control signals are provided like Load, Enable, Inhibit, byte select. Output angle is given in digital form 16 bits resolution. Power requirements are ±15 and +5V DC.

Typical applications of a synchro to digital converter or those of a resolver to digital converter include fire control, inertial navigation, flight surface positioning, cockpit simulators, jet engine control, antenna pedestal control, cockpit indicators, landing gear positioning and control flap actuators.

The device can be used in any application, in which the exact rotation of an object relative to another object is needed, such as in a rotary antenna platform or a robot. The advantage of this technology is that the resolver is directly mounted to an electric motor. A further advantage is that the resolver feedback signals are monitored for multiple revolutions by another device. The aforementioned advantages allow for geared reduction of assemblies being rotated and therefore improved accuracy from the resolver system.

The system is used for many applications such as in the aerospace, shipping and marine industry, robotics, control surface position pickup, azimuth and elevation drives, linearity, to determine the position of an actuator or torque motor position.
