Description:
Team of Latvian engineers and medical experts has developed a non-expensive automated lung ventilator that can be used during COVID-19 pandemic. Purpose of design is to provide simplified but functional model that would help medics to save lives of patients with short-term respiratory failure. Device design is based on use of manual resuscitator bag. Compression of it is done by electromechanical actuator with microcomputer control. Ventilator incorporates necessary sensors for adaptive and safe operation according requirements of EU and Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency - MHRA (UK) to medical devices.
Supported ventilation modes:
pressure regulated volume control - PRVC;
volume control - VC;
volume control-assist control - VC-AC;
pressure control - PC,
pressure control-assist control - PC-AC.

Inspiration to Expiration ratio (I:E ratio) 1:1 up to 1:3
Respiration Rate: 10 - 30 breaths per minute (BPM)
Additional Oxygen to air: FiO2 21-100%; Integrated Oxygen level measurement

Advantages and Innovations:
Design of ventilator has several advantages and innovations in comparison with similar, developed during last months. Team`s idea was to create design, that can be fast put into production, using off-the-shelf components, like actuators, sensors, computer and display modules, power supply. Other parts are simple cut and formed from stainless steel, aluminium and plastics to make production less expensive and fast.
Other innovations for this simple model:
Double side compression of bag, leading to more accurate volume and pressure parameters;
Adaptive control software, with upgrade possibility;
Sensors for all main vital parameters;
Parameter graphic display with touch screen and additional press buttons for use with medical gloves.
