A Spanish biotechnology company workin in the generation, transfer, exploitation and marketing of innovative agro-biotechnological solutions has developed a method for the production of transgenic plants having high starch content, amylose rich starch and higher biomass yield.

Starch is a carbohydrate produced by plants and used as raw material for several industrial sectors. In the starch industry, current trends aim at shortening the development processes, increasing yield in starch production and obtaining starches with different physic-chemical characteristics for new industrial applications. Involved sectors include biofuels, adhesives, cosmetics, bioplastics, detergents, thickeners, etc.

In the ethanol production industry, starch limited availability poses the primary obstacle for its development. Biotechnological developments of new crops that over-accumulate starch can contribute to overcome this problem and reach US and EU fossil fuel substitution objectives.

To boost this trend, a Spanish biotech company has developed a technology which allows obtaining plant varieties with increased starch content and/or starch with different structural characteristics by means of increasing amylose/amylopectin balance. These interesting traits are obtained through the ectopic expression of genes coding for GPs (Alfa-1,4-glucan phosphorylases). The technology is patent protected and field proven.

The technology provider is a knowledge intensive SME with a scientific background based on a broad plant and bacterial carbohydrate metabolism knowledge at a physiological, biochemical and molecular level. The company holds a substantial portfolio of patents.

The company is looking for license agreements, joint venture agreements or commercial agreements with technical cooperation for the exploitation of this technology.
Advantages and Innovations:
The provided technology will enable producers of plants to increase the starch production, hence yielding higher returns on their investments.

In addition the modified plant varieties offer high amylose/amylopectin ratio which may also be of industrial interest.
