Description:
Data loggers have become indispensable attendants for sensitive products that have to be transported. The current technique of this device offers a limited running time.

For this reason a German university invented a self-sufficient data logger. This invention uses a piezoelectric element as an acceleration sensor, since it - depending on the magnitude of the acceleration - produces electrical signals during a shock. These electrical signals are used both as a measurement signal and as power source for the circuit, which stores the data concerning the shock event.

The researchers use the piezo element not only as a sensor and as an energy source, but use it as a means for data transmission. The communication between the data logger and the reader is done acoustically in the kHz range. In this way, no antenna is needed and the chip cannot be destroyed by an electromagnetic pulse - in contrast to an RFID chip. Other variants, which measure the time of the shock event and / or the strength of the shock, can be realized. Furthermore a co-detection of other environment parameters is possible.

This invention can be used in particular for shock detection in shipping, in the packing stations and logistics centres. Each chip can be read out to determine whether a packet was transported properly or not. For this purpose the device can already be integrated into a packing during its production. A multiple usage is possible.

The German university offers a license agreement and is open for further technical cooperation to determine specifications with companies active in the field of transport or logistics.
Advantages and Innovations:
In comparison to other data loggers for shock detection this invention is self-sufficient. There are nor restrictions on the use of time. Because of the simple technique the device is compact, suitable for mass production and therefore also very cost effective.
