Description:
A technological SME based in the region of Attica-Greece, has developed an innovative technology for the waterproofing and protection of cement-based surfaces. Multiple nanotechnology driven formulations are developed in order to add functionality and boost energy efficiency in buildings and construction projects.The new water-based formulations act completely differently, when compared to polymer membranes or traditional silicone-based formulations, as they do not create a plastic film on the surface applied. The new product protects and waterproofs surfaces by deeply penetrating into the pores of the cement-based substrates: Instead of sealing the pores, nanoparticles coat them, assuring that water and other corroding factors are effectively repelled by chemical forces. In this manner, protection is provided deep into the substrate which is therefore not affected by abrasion or mechanical wear. As nanoparticles do not form polymer chains, the products modified surfaces can last longer; even after eight years they can exhibit 95% of their original activity or functionality. The formulations are more resistant to the harmful part of solar light (UV radiation) which does not cause them to become yellowish. While the formulations do not alter the colour and natural appearance of the surfaces modified, they still allow them to breathe.
A very important advantage of the technology is the ability of the modified surfaces to breathe. In particular, if moisture is trapped behind a coated surface, the water will evaporate into the environment without accumulating inside the buildings structure. Therefore, internal (negative) pressure is relieved by evaporation since water vapours can still flow inside the pores of the material and exit into the open environment. However, water from the external environment is blocked from being transferred inside the material. In this manner, common building failures (swelling, cracking, warping) are prevented and the coated surfaces remain dry and unchanged in both their appearance and mechanical properties.
The potential partner is expected to use the water-proofing agents for their own business with technical support from the Greek company. Tailor-made technical services to the partner companies for the efficient use of the developed technology are also envisaged.
Advantages and Innovations:
A very important advantage of the technology is the breathing of the modified surfaces. In particular, in case moisture is trapped behind a coated surface, the water will evaporate into the environment without accumulating inside the building´s structure.
The formulation is water-based, containing nanoparticles which have been specially engineered to deeply penetrate and shield the microscopic pores of surfaces. While water and moisture are actively repelled, the materials retain their ability to breathe. The new material makes your surfaces moisture-free and therefore hinders mould or mildew growth and eliminates the threat of freezing.
