Development of a Mobile Platform Managed via Internet Access and Its Feasibility Study
Summary:
One of the biggest Lithuanian universities, having deep experience in technological sector, is looking for cooperation. The main goal of the research is to create a layout for a mobile platform which allows a person to participate (see, hear, speak and manipulate objects) in any place where this platform is located and where there is internet access. Both industry and academia are sought for technical cooperation, financial or commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Description:
The mobile platform is operated by a person who can monitor information provided on the screen from the video camera installed on the platform and hear the sounds surrounding the platform. Video transmission includes a method where a high-priority segment is refreshed at maximum frequency, whereas other segments, their frequency and quality depend on internet access quality. During movement, the board computer registers odometric parameters which are used for autonomous movement by a saved trajectory, allowing the platform to return home. The latest application area for the robot - carrying of a capsule. The robot and its arms are controlled by a keyboard or a special panel. A gesture recognition system could be used. Object monitoring and manipulation will use a 3D camera and 3D glasses if internet access is fast enough.
Remote customer service for the disabled, sightseeing trips, exploration or participation in "avatar" mode, performance of simple tasks in dangerous zones or other time zones, etc.
University is looking for cooperation in commercial and technological areas.
Advantages and Innovations:
This mobile robot platform encompasses the ability to move, see, touch, manipulate, hear and transmit sounds. It can be used as an augmented reality device. Designed experimental version of the mobile robot platform with controllable gears, measures for odometric control, a video camera, a board computer and wireless communication equipment. Created mobile platform control algorithms and methods for automatic segmentation of a video. Completed experimental research of video transmission, control and returning back home functions. Two-hand manipulator, its control and 3D imaging tools are under development. A functioning mobile robot platform is currently used for demonstrating the possibilities of the robot.
No similar commercial products on the same level. There are many experimental or commercial models which perform a single or several functions but they are not integrated.
