Summary:
A UK product development company has developed a novel light weight, highly efficient crankless internal combustion engine which does not require tooling for the crankshaft and connecting rods. This significantly reduces the cost compared to the conventional cranked engines.
The company is looking to co-operate with engineering and equipment manufacture companies for final development and commercialisation via a license or technical co-operation agreement.
Description:
A UK product design and development company has developed advanced internal combustion engine which does away with the following components:
1. Crankshaft and bearings
2. Connecting rods and bearings
3. Gudgeon pins and circlips
4. The engine block

The above components are replaced by a drive mechanism in a casing. Each piston has one bearing only, the drive mechanism has two plain thrust bearings and drive (power) output needle roller bearings.
The pistons are concentrically installed in the cylinders with zero offset thus obviating "piston slap" and reducing internal friction.
The novel engine uses conventional thermodynamics and sealing technologies. It is lighter, has reduced internal friction, less components and is therefore cheaper to manufacture, has a high power to weight ratio as well as higher torque output.
It has the ability to provide dynamically variable compression ratio and also dynamically variable capacity, which allows to alter the engine size, subject to a secret know-how.
The company offers technical co-operation for the final stage of the development or is ready to license out to companies from the automotive sector wanting to commercialise the product independently.
Advantages and Innovations:
The crankless internal combustion engine is more efficient due to the reduced internal friction and the engine´s ability to supercharge itself using the dVCR (dynamically variable compression ratio) system. This can allow for the piston to dwell at bottom dead centre for several degree of rotation of the flywheel allowing for a maximum charge of the fuel/air mixture.
