Description:
The researchers from the faculty of science at one of the prominent Czech universities have developed a device that can handle small objects with hight throughput in a controlled environment. Originally invented for the purposes of handling seeds during plant phenotyping research, this technology can be applied in different areas as well.

Seed transfer is a critical point (and bottleneck) in seed samples preparation process with respect to high quality requirements and demanding manual operation.

The device and method is designed (especially) to the field of indoor plant cultivation systems, more specifically for automatic preparation of seed samples. The seed samples are particularly suitable for plant phenotyping. It can be used as a part of plant phenotyping system as well as a separate machine.

The technology offers high throughput transfer of seeds (even Arabidopsis thaliana size seeds) into cultivation vessel (a petri dish, a microtitre plate, a multiwell plate), detection of the gripped seed (incl. camera, a source of light, and an image-processing system), injects liquid (e.g. cultivation medium, tested chemical, gel-forming liquid) in controlled environment protecting against contamination. The liquid handling unit may contain one or more dispensing heads so the same liquid or different liquids can be dispensed.

There is a possibility to handle other small objects, too. The technology is designed to be incorporated as a part of plant phenotyping system to eliminate a usual bottleneck of these systems. The technology can be used for a separate machine working independently in laboratories as well.

The partner should therefore be a company or a research center that works in plant phenotyping (or other areas where the delicate handling of seed-sized objects can be used) and that wishes to innovate their processes.
