Un centro de investigación singapurense ha desarrollado un kit de inmunoensayo óptico para la detección de iridovirus y diagnóstico in situ temprano de enfermedades de los peces. Los iridovirus son muy eficaces en la propagación de enfermedades en peces de agua dulce y aumentan el índice de mortalidad en más de 32 especies de peces marinos, ornamentales y de agua dulce. Este kit es útil en gestión de riesgos de bioseguridad de granjas marinas y ayuda a reducir el índice de mortalidad de animales acuáticos de agua dulce. El centro de investigación busca socios industriales (pymes de cualquier tamaño y multinacionales) en los sectores de agricultura y pesca con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia, continuar con el desarrollo y comercializar la tecnología.

The institution is seeking industry partners (SMEs of any sizes or MNEs) in the agriculture and fishing sectors for licensing partnerships.
Description:
The Singapore research institution has developed the Optical Immunoassay (OIA) detection kit based on the identification and diagnosis of Iridoviruses in aquatic farms. Iridoviruses can be very effective in spreading diseases in freshwater fishes and can also increase the mortality rate in more than 32 species of marine, ornamental, and freshwater fish species including Gourami, Dwarf gourami, angel, platys, guppies, and doctor fish.

The Iridoviral disease is one of the main viruses in the South-East Asian region which can affect the population of food and ornamental fishes. This virus detection kit will be very handy for conducting post vaccine fish health monitoring in aquaculture farms.

This OIA kit will also enable rapid screening of the fish population for better quarantine management as compared to conventional detection technologies, which are labour intensive and also time consuming.

The immunoassay kit will be used for frequent fish health monitoring which will provide actionable recommendations to farmers and help them perform intervention measures that can eliminate a possible epidemic among the aquatic animals. Besides, it will protect aquaculture farmers against financial losses associated with such unprecedented events.

The research institution is keen to partner SMEs of any sizes or MNEs such as those from the aquaculture industries to license and further develop and commercialise this technology.
Advantages and Innovations:
The Immunoassay Kit consists of tissue and blood processing gadgets along with specific antibody response devices which can detect both the virus and the host in a single test. This kit has many features including the following:

· It has a rapid detection time of Iridoviruses within 25 minutes and a total analysis time of less than 2 hours. This detection test is faster than conventional detection technologies.

· It is completely field deployable with less use of manual labour and is highly user friendly with reduced logistics load and increased visual read out. This enables end users to make better decisions while monitoring fish health.

· This kit also possesses 100% specificity and more than 90% sensitivity. This enables the detection limit of 5000 viral particles per millilitre (ml) of processed tissues or blood samples.

The immunoassay kit can also be customized so as to enable the detection of multiple pathogens of interest to aquaculture farmers. This enhances farmers´ decision making systems, ensuring an increase in return on investment for them.
