Description:
The fields of application of continuous manipulators are e.g. medical technology or handling technology. The manipulators are used to reach difficult areas (e.g. narrow cavities).

State of the art and most commonly used are continuous manipulators with segments of fixed length. Via the guide pulleys mechanical adjusting devices such as cables, rods or the like can be conducted. Despite the preselection of the segment lengths, there are areas of application where a continuous operating mechanism by means of the state of the art does not reach the desired final position.
Advantages and Innovations:
The new technology relates to a compliant manipulator designed with a significantly improved agility. The individual segments of the manipulators are covered with permanent magnetic guideway discs. The arrangement of the segments is designed in such a way that these repel each other and with a change in length of the manipulator an equal distance of the segments is the result. The motion of the manipulator is e.g. initiated by cables or rods. The change of segment length can be enabled by sliding concentric tubes formed from a superelastic nickel-titanium alloy.
