Tittle:
Design of aerodynamic retrofit elements for rotor blades of wind turbines
Summary:
German start-up engineering company has developed an aerodynamic element for rotor blades of wind turbines. This manufacturer-independent element improves the technical and economic characteristic of a rotor blade and results in 3-5% more profit for the operator. Within a commercial agreement with technical assistance the company offers its innovation to service providers of wind turbines eager to expand their service with retrofitting.
Description:
The German company is a spin-off from a local University of Applied Sciences and was founded in 2016. Its owner has more than 20 years of experience in aerodynamics e.g. in aerospace and wind energy. The new product of the company was developed by the University of Applied Sciences together with a large local service company for wind turbines.

Rotor blades can be divided into three segments: the root with a circular cross section at that end of the blade where it is mounted to the hub, the aerodynamic segment which forms the largest part of the blade, and a transition area between root and aerodynamic segment where the circular form is adapted to the aerodynamic one. This transition area causes aerodynamic problems like boundary layer resolution and swirling which result in vibrations of the rotor blade and finally in additional noise and less efficiency.

The new developed aerodynamic element reduces the named problems independently of the blade angle. It is an inherently stable plate mounted at the trailing edge of the transition area with a well-defined angle to the trailing edge of the blade and a well-defined height-profile. Despite of its simple appearance the dimensions of this element are specific for each rotor blade and have to be calculated individually using numerical tools.

Because of its special market segment the company wants to address the international market right from the beginning. It offers its expertise to design these aerodynamic elements within a commercial agreement with technical assistance. Partners should be service companies for wind turbines, especially those engaged in rotor blade services. Based on technical data provided by the service company, the aerodynamic elements as well as the expected increase of efficiency will be calculated. Dependent of the contract the aerodynamic elements itself or all necessary data for manufacturing the elements will be provided by the German company. The installation of the retrofits will be done by the service provider.
Advantages and Innovations:
The improved aerodynamics of the rotor blade result in the following advantages:
1. increase of profit by about 3-5%;
2. lower loads and therefore less stress on the rotor blades as well as on the whole turbine and other components (power train, transmission, generator, main shaft, etc.);
3. no increase of emissions from the rotor blade;
4. prolonging service life and reducing operating costs.
The aerodynamic elements are manufacturer-independent and designed for retrofitting, so that nearly all rotor blades can be improved with these elements.
Stage of Development:
Prototype available for demonstration
IPs:

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
Potential partners should be service companies for wind turbines, especially those engaged in rotor blade service. They should have experience in selling retrofits to their customers or should at least be willing to do this in future. From a technical point of view they will have to provide the technical data of the respective rotorblade to the German company and should be able to install the aerodynamic elements onto the blade.
