Design of novel colloidal carrier systems against UV-induced skin damage
Summary:
A group of researchers from department of pharmaceutical technology of a university located in Izmir,Turkey. Researchers have developed a patented formulation of colloidal system to ensure protection from UV (ultra violet) oriented skin damage. Inventors seek partners from industry who are manufacturers of UV protection emulsion systems under licensing agreement.
Description:
Inventors of this new skin protection system are specialized in formulating emulsion systems and carry out research for pharmaceutical sector from a university located in Izmir, Turkey.

There has been several research studies regarding the improvement of skin protection systems and last year same group of researchers has successfully commercialized an emulsion system that rapidly heals bed wounds that is observed in elderly people.

The formulation contains a surfactant free emulsion with elastic niosomes dispersion. It carries a sunscreen agent in the oil phase of the emulsion surrounded by solid nanoparticles which gives extra physical UV protection. In the aqueous phase of the formulation there are elastic niosomes with an antioxidant agent. Elastic niosomes carry antioxidant agent into the deeper layers of the skin so that it prevents DNA damage by acting as a free radical scavenger and activating cytoprotective pathways. Surfactant free emulsion provides sunscreen agent maintain at epidermis longer than classical emulsions so that it does not penetrate deeper layers of the skin and go through the blood circulation.

UV radiation can cause skin damage, skin ageing and even skin cancer. Best way to protect skin from UV radiation is to use sunscreens. Because of the stability and the durability problems of the sunscreen agents, efficiency of the sunscreens for prevention has been questioned.

As a solution researchers designed a novel formulation composed of two novel carrier systems which allows an antioxidant agent into the deeper skin layers and provides sunscreen agent maintain at epidermis longer than classical emulsions. Industrial partners manufacturing emulsion systems are sought to commercialize this protection system under licensing agreement.

Advantages and Innovations:
The formulation differs from others as a combination formulation of an antioxidant agent and a sunscreen agent with two different novel carrier systems. There are several papers reported that some commonly used sunscreen agents are endocrine active chemicals having estrogenic effect and causing cancer cells. To prevent that it´s important to keep the sunscreen agent at upper layers of the skin and this formulation only reaches to the upper layers for the skin.

Surfactant free emulsion surrounded by solid nanoparticles provides sunscreen agent maintain at epidermis. However UV radiation can still cause DNA damage by activation of ROS (reactive oxygen species) in deeper skin layers. Elastic niosomes in this formulation penetrate into the deeper skin layers and prevents cells acting as a free radical scavenger and activating cytoprotective pathways.
