Este dispositivo evita las interferencias de materia orgánica y consigue un límite de detección bajo, pudiendo aplicarse incluso en muestras menos contaminadas por mercurio. Se buscan socios de la industria manufacturera interesados en la licencia de la patente.

Summary:
A Spanish institution has developed an analytical device for determining mercury species in a wide variety of solid matrices (fly ash, gypsum, soils, sediments, etc.) even in those with a high carbon content, that avoids interferences resulting from the organic matter. The new analytical device achieves a low detection limit allowing its application even to less mercury contaminated samples. Partners from manufacturing industry are being sought to collaborate through a patent license agreement.
Description:
A Spanish R-Y-D institution has developed this device, that has proven to be a reliable tool for identification of mercury species. This analytical device uses the principle of thermal programmed desorption to separate and subsequently identify different forms of mercury. A novel configuration that oxidises the volatile matter produced by carbonaceous samples without interfering with the volatilized mercury species from the solid matrix is employed prior to the mercury detector. In this way, an accurate and sensitive determination of the total mercury content is achieved at -Y-micro;g·g-1 and even at -Y-micro;g·Kg-1 levels.

In addition, the fact that no reagents or sample handling is required facilitates the use of this device for mercury speciation.

Manufacturers are wanted in order to produce and commercialize the device, establishing a commercial relationship through a patent license agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
- It offers an easy, fast and cost-effective analysis.

- No sample dissolution is necessary and direct determination is possible (other technologies need a sample pretreatment).

- No risk of interferences from reagents.

- It demonstrates a high selectivity and an ability to isolate and identify individual mercury species.

- The new configuration eliminates interferences caused by the volatile matter from carbonaceous materials in the identification of the mercury species (a common problem in other analysis devices).

- It provides high quality data - reliable results regarding the concentration and identification of mercury species.

- It contributes to a better understanding of mercury behaviour in different environments and processes (due to the selective analysis of mercury species, which is not possible in most of nowaday´s devices).

- Applicable to a wide variety of samples: coal, sediments, soils, gypsum, fly ash and several Hg-sorbents have been successfully analysed by this speciation device without any prior pretreatment.
