Este dispositivo ha sido diseñado para su instalación en serie con tirantes metálicos convencionales empleados normalmente para reforzar estructuras dinámicas que absorben empujes horizontales. El dispositivo es capaz de disipar la energía en un evento sísmico y puede diseñarse en función del área de intervención para contrarrestar las acciones generadas por el terremoto y la expansión térmica a la que se someten los tirantes metálicos, que modifican considerablemente el equilibrio de las fuerzas en la estructura. El centro de investigación busca socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos de comercialización con asistencia técnica, licencia y cooperación técnica.

Description:
The technology offered refers to a Shape Memory Alloys based device for protection of thrusting structures. The device for thrusting structures is designed to be installed in series with traditional metal tie rod that are normally used to reinforce thrusting structures absorbing horizontal thrust. The device can be designed, depending on intervention area, to counteract both the actions deriving by the earthquake and the thermal expansion to which the metal tie rod are subjected, which greatly vary the balance of forces in the structure.

During an earthquake the thrusting structures (arches or vaults) are subject to movements and accelerations which cause differential damage that can lead to structures collapse.
Shape memory alloys have a unique property, known as super-elasticity (or pseudo elasticity) that dissipates large amounts of deformation energy through hysteretic cycles in the stress-strain plane. The result of such cycles is a zero or almost zero residual deformation, which can be helpful during seismic events to ensure deformation energy dissipation ensuring the repositioning of elements in the pre-earthquake configuration.
The know-how regards the various damping properties of different alloys such as Nitinol and other copper-based. The technology can be applied to infrastructure sector, for protection in case of an earthquake, and to cultural heritage sector (thrusting masonery structures) or for existing buildings protection.

The italian research technology organization which offer this technology has carried out applied research activities on materials, processes, techniques and methods in order to develop and innovate products and services. It is a no profit organization of public institutions and firms. Its specific thematic competences are focused on advanced materials, ICTs, industrial design, innovation market analysis. It implements a concrete technology transfer, as the knowledge generated though its autonomous research projects, is used to solve innovation issues of its customers, meeting their needs and responding to their problems. It therefore acts as connection and integration element among the various innovation players: producers, users and mediators of knowledge and innovation. The company vision is based on the awareness of the crucial importance of innovation for social and economic development.
Advantages and Innovations:
Improvement of the seismic performance (sussultatory phenomena) of metal tie rod embedded within the thusting structures typical of Italian building heritage (eg semi-circular brickwork); improvement of the static performance of metal chains due to thermal variations.

The device is able to dissipate the energy related to a seismic event and to bring the structure to the initial position without residual strain.

On the market there are no similar products or systems able to improve the behaviour of metal tie rod, in thrusting structures, in relation to seismic actions and force variation due to thermal deformation.
