Este dispositivo permite colocar el catéter en el sitio de la vena adecuada del paciente sin posibilidad de migración futura. El dispositivo consiste en una estructura con dos brazos que realizan una rotación de 0 a 180º. El paciente se coloca en el dispositivo y, una vez que la guía es insertada en la vena, los brazos del paciente realizan un movimiento rotacional. El instituto busca empresas interesadas en comercializar el dispositivo o en establecer acuerdos de cooperación en materia de investigación para su desarrollo.

Description:
A Spanish Healthcare Research Institute, working in the field of biomedical sciences, has developed a supporting device for the guidance of peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC) or brachial reservoirs that allows catheters and reservoirs to be placed in the ideal location of the patient´s vein.

In the medical field, when a patient needs a medical treatment, or for a long time, or the patient has poor venous access, peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC) or brachial reservoirs are usually inserted in a patient´s vein. Through these devices, healthcare personnel can infuse all types of medication, extract blood samples and also perform scanners or magnetic resonance imaging.

Following the normal practice of catheters insertion, it has been observed that the catheter can migrate from the place where it was located. This migration can result in serious consequences for the patient´s health. In approximately 50% of patients the catheter migrates towards the back of the vein, entering the ventricle and causing arrhythmias; in approximately 10% of the patients the catheter migrates towards the front of the vein, providing an irregular flow. Only in approximately 40% of the patients the tip of the catheter is well placed, without any migration.

The Healthcare Research Institute presents a supporting device for the guidance of catheters insertion that allows catheters and reservoirs to be placed in the ideal location of the patient´s vein without possibility of future migration.

The device consists of a body comprising two arms that allow a rotation from 0 to 180º. The patient is placed on the device and once the guidewire of the catheter is inserted into the patient´s vein, a rotational movement of the patient´s arms, which are placed in the arms of the device, is performed. This rotation movement (beween 0 and 180º) allows guiding the guidewire of the catheter in such a way that it is place in the ideal location without possibility of future migration.

The present technology is available to license. The Healthcare Research Institute would like to talk to companies interested in commercializing this technology, or companies interested in a research cooperation agreement to develop the device.
