Device for auto-inserting and extracting an internal bag for the collection of waste in patients with disposal stoma surgery
A Spanish research group in engineering and medicine has patented a self-expanding device for placing and extracting a bag inside the body, which collects waste of a patient who has undergone an intervention as a colostomy or ileostomy. The device can be easily operated by the patient themselves and provides an enhancement in life quality and self-esteem. Companies in the medical or veterinarian fields are sought to develop applications of the described technology under license agreements.
A digestive stoma (ostomy) is a portion of the intestine that goes out the abdominal area (through surgery and through a hole) to remove organic waste that for some reason cannot be evacuated through the rectum. The function of the stoma is, therefore, to allow the exit of feces and gases outside the body. In order to collect these residues, there are currently different solutions that help the patient lead a normal life and live with an ostomy, a condition suffered between 2 and 4 per thousand adults in Western countries: external bag systems (closed and for one single use, or open and for several uses), stoma plugs or colostomy irrigation.

The most used solution is the external pouches or bags but they have some drawbacks such as the reduction in the patient´s quality of life, especially in relation to the self-corporal image, difficulties for the accomplishment of certain activities and the recurrent appearance of irritations-eczema by the contact of the feces with the skin due to the difficulties of achieving a perfect attachment of the pouch´s adhesive disc to the edge of the stoma or also due to sensitive skin reacting to said adhesive.

Researchers from a Spanish university working in engineering and medicine have jointly developed a self-expanding device for placing a bag inside the body, which collects waste of a patient who has undergone an intervention as a colostomy or ileostomy. The invention comprises:

- A pouch or bag inserted inside a patient´s body for collecting the waste.
- A self-expander device on said pouch, which inserts and expands the bag inside the patient´s body and is attached to the patient´s body.
- Means for attaching the self-expander device to the patient´s body.

The invention is applicable in the sectors in which devices for medical treatment or other medical therapies for drug dosing or collection of samples are designed, produced and used, and in particular in the health sector and in patients with stoma.

The researchers would like to reach license agreements with companies operating in the medical or veterinarian fields to develop applications of the described technology.

The university is a public institution oriented to education, research and technology transfer. However, it is not one of its capacities or goals to manufacture industrial products or distribute them commercially. Therefore, the university seeks to sign a patent licence agreement for a company to manufacture and commercialize the above-described technology.
Advantages and Innovations:
· The invention provides a better acceptance of the corporal change and greater comfort in patients with disposal stoma.
· In an embodiment of the invention, the attachment means to the body do not include adhesive elements to the patient´s skin, which helps to avoid skin disorders.
· The pouch or bag of the device is positioned in such a way that it does not come into contact with the waste, either when the bag is placed or extracted. This avoids the irritation of the skin around the stoma and greatly facilitates its subsequent manipulation.
· The pouch of the device is placed inside the intestine of the patient, thus allowing no external sign of the colostomy and permanently or temporary use.
· The device can also be attached, unmodified, to the commercial adhesive discs which are currently used for holding of external bags. It also has the possibility of self-attaching to the stoma through a lever mechanism.
· The device can be adapted to different stoma sizes through its customization by additive manufacturing techniques and parametric design.
