Description:
Animal traps and luring devices are in widespread use, e.g. in domestic environments to trap rodents or insects, in agriculture to control pests affecting crop yield, or in malaria prevention measures.

Such devices exploit various luring mechanisms in combination with different termination mechanisms, e.g. carbon dioxide, electricity, or toxic molecules. Currently available traps have limited longevity and other drawbacks. Many lure molecules, for example, deplete quickly due to the volatile nature and traps relying on electricity depend on electrical infrastructure. Chemical insecticides based on glue also show similar problems. This requires the maintenance of the device by continuous cleaning, replacing, and filling.

A group of German scientists and students has developed an improved luring and trapping device for insects, which alleviates these problems. Longevity of the luring device is enhanced based on the action of genetically engineered microorganisms. The modified microorganisms are placed in a specifically designed container, which allows the continuous release of the insect-attracting active agent, while the microorganisms have access to nutrients. The compartment containing the microorganisms is connected to a second compartment, which is freely accessible to the animal, hence bringing the animal in contact with the active agent. The design of this device and its operation principle allows a long operation life and high target specificity. Therefore it provides significant advantages for application in domestic, agricultural, or remote environments.

Partners are sought for sponsoring the presentation of the technology to an international audience, especially within the framework of an imminent international science and invention contest October 2018. Beyond that, partners from the fields of agro-industries, crop science, or businesses active in malaria prevention are sought for a potential transfer of rights of existing IP (pending patent), licensing, or R-Y-D collaborations to further the technology and to conduct field tests.
