Un instituto de investigación sueco ha desarrollado un sistema de medida online para la detección rápida y sencilla de contaminación fecal en recursos hídricos utilizando la bacteria E. coli como indicador. El sistema no necesita cultivar la bacteria para realizar las medidas. La concentración se obtiene directamente después de la medición y puede transmitirse online. Aunque la sensibilidad es comparable a la de otros métodos, este sistema ofrece como ventajas el tiempo de respuesta y la posibilidad de realizar medidas online. Online measurement of raw water quality is important in order to avoid outbreaks of water-borne diseases and therefore very interesting for the water producers and for society in general.

A Swedish research institute has developed a measurement system to monitor fecal contamination in water resources. The system allows early detection. It uses E.coli as indicator bacteria and since it does not need to cultivate bacteria can give results on-line, much faster than existing methods.

The method is based on fluorescently labelled antibodies which specific bind to the indicator bacteria. An optical instrument has been developed to count individual bacteria in a continuous sample flow.

The instrument has great potential for online measurement of E.coli concentration in raw water, which makes it suitable as an important part of an early warning system.

The institute is looking for instrument developers and product owners to engage in further development of the system and commercialization.
Advantages and Innovations:
The online flow cytometer can detect fecal contamination faster than existing techniques.
The system does not need to cultivate bacteria to measure. The concentration is given directly after measuring and can be communicated online. This is a big advantage compared with conventional techniques.

The system measures living and dead bacteria (E.Coli) which is an advantage, specially if the leak happened far from the measuring point. The sensitivity is comparable with other existing methods but the response time and the possility to measure online are the big advantages.

The system has been designed to be more robust to match the industrial environment to a lower cost than a conventional flow cytometer.
