Se estima que el número de usuarios potenciales de este dispositivo sea de 300.000 paciente al año solo en Europa. La tecnología permite la limpieza adecuada de la piel y la herida quirúrgica gracias a la separación conseguida entre la piel y el drenaje ventricular externo. El instituto busca empresas, preferiblemente fabricantes de dispositivos médicos, con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia para la explotación comercial de la tecnología.

Description:
Ventriculitis is the inflammation of the ventricles in the brain. The ventricles are responsible for containing and circulating cerebrospinal fluid throughout the brain. Ventriculitis is caused by infection of the ventricles, leading to swelling and inflammation. This is especially prevalent in patients with external ventricular drainages and intraventricular stents.
Ventriculitis associated with external ventricular drainage (EVD) is one of the most important complications associated with the use of these devices, with an incidence ranging between 5% and 20% depending on series and high mortality and morbidity, increased hospital stay, health care costs and treatment of the associated sequelae. Ventriculitis can cause a wide variety of short-term symptoms and long-term side effects ranging from headaches and dizziness to unconsciousness and death if not treated early.
In recent years, coated catheters have been designed with different materials (silver, antibiotics), but high manufacturing costs, changes in the epidemiology infections associated with these devices, as well as, difficulty maintaining proper hygiene at the entry point into the skin surface, make it necessary to seek for new fastening systems.
Researchers of a Spanish medical research institute in collaboration with a biomechanics research center have developed a new safety and protection device for EVD, based on a structure capable of holding inside the EVD that insulates the scalp and, in turn, the fixing system prevents unintentional removal.
Likewise, its bactericidal coating or composition prevents bacterial nesting and biofilm formation on the EVD associated with the possible occurrence of ventriculitis episodes.
Avoiding ventriculitis episodes associated with EVD has a high economic and social impact (care costs, hospital stays and treatment of associated complications). Besides appearance of ventriculitis increases the chances of permanent neurological sequelae with the consequent human and social deleterious effect.
The potential users for this device could be estimated in 300,000 patients / year only in Europe, so the research institute is interested in looking for companies willing to reach a license agreement to commercialize this EVD. The ideal partners would be manufacturers of consumable devices in the health-care sector.
