Este dispositivo permite cortar tejido tridimensional de muestras biológicas en diferentes niveles y es capaz de modificar la velocidad de corte. La tecnología se aplica en centros de investigación y hospitales y supone un avance en el campo de las neurociencias. El nuevo sistema consiste en dos contenedores de dimensiones similares a los empleados en los vibratomos convencionales, pero incluye un sistema electromecánico que confiere a la plataforma en la que se deposita la muestra la capacidad de moverse. La universidad busca socios industriales e investigadores con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia o cooperación técnica.

Description:
The brain is a highly complex structure consisting of highly distributed neural circuits, which are connected by long-distance connections. To learn more about the brain, it is necessary to study the function of neural circuits. For such purpose, electrophysiological information is obtained through tissue samples cut by vibratomes. Thereby making vibratomes an indispensable tool both in research and in the daily work of hospitals and laboratories.

The new system designed by the researchers consists of two containers with dimensions similar to those commonly used in conventional vibratomes, but which in turn includes an electromechanical system, which provides the platform where the biological sample is deposited the ability to move. This new system allows reorienting the sample under study by changing the inclination and/or rotation with which the microtome blade penetrates it.

The invention is a new automatic positioning system which allows three-dimensional tissue cutting of biological samples. This tool, which is essential in both research centers and hospitals, will greatly enhance progress in neuroscientific knowledge, as it allows tissue cutting in different levels and following cutting-paths during the cutting process on a vibratome, exceeding the limits of conventional vibratomes. The new device is able to modify the speed depending on the speed rate at which the vibratome is set.

Thanks to the new positioning system it will be possible to conduct better studies and experiments in the field of circuit electrophysiology, enabling the obtention of inaccessible information until now, which will greatly enhance progress in the field of neuroscience

The technology described above offers different innovative aspects. For exemple, it provides the option of performing multi-directional histological sections. Besides, it allows the selection of cuts by their anatomical interest and not by the limitations or restrictions imposed by the cutting system, and allows rotating the sample with an accuracy of hundredths of a degree and tilting the sample with an accuracy of thousandths of a degree too. It provides a cutting speed synchronized with the speed at which the microtome is configured and works with paths extracted from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The system designed is primarily aimed at laboratories, research centers and hospitals. It is particularly aimed at the field of histology and neuroscience, where it will enable complex sectioning of nerve fiber tracts to study their density, the location of its projections and its three-dimensional structure.

The inventors have developed a prototype of the new automatic vibratome that is currently up and running and ready to be introduced in those companies that may be interested. They are seeking for companies interested in establishing patent license agreements for use and/or marketing and companies or research centers to reach technical cooperation agreements for further developments.
