Un equipo de un centro de investigación griego ha desarrollado un instrumento portátil para el análisis y caracterización de elementos químicos en materiales sólidos. Este sistema se basa en espectroscopía inducida por láser y es capaz de realizar un análisis rápido e in situ de múltiples elementos (minerales, productos químicos y materias primas). El sistema puede instalarse en la línea de producción, ofreciendo medidas de alta sensibilidad de forma rápida. Se buscan socios industriales en los sectores de minerales y aeroespacial con el fin de establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica y adaptar el sistema a necesidades de producción específicas.

The system is based on laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and is capable to provide rapid multi-elemental analysis ´´In-situ". The research group seeks industrial partners from the mineral or aerospace sector for technical cooperation agreement in regard of adapting the system to serve special production needs.
Description:
Product control at various stages of production process and the determination of the chemical composition of raw materials is of significant importance for the contemporary industry. Until now, the industry is usually forced to maintain chemical labs for quality assurance/control issues, or cooperate with external labs under a time consuming process that includes the following steps: The samples are collected from the production line or/and the raw materials (1). Then, they are transported to the chemical lab for examination (2), where an analysis is conducted (3) and results are communicated back to the industry (4). Finally, decision making is taking place at the course of production (5). The conventional process, as described above, is time consuming resulting in a significant waste of resources and low efficiency at production in a very competitive international context.

The Greek research centre provides an integrated solution that helps industry to overcome this problem. It provides a fully portable system that is capable to carry out real time analysis and characterization of minerals, chemical products and raw materials. Ideally, the system could be installed in the production line, offering high sensitivity measurements rapidly. More precisely, in the case of the mineral industry, the system could be used as a critical component of the production line that either detects a material or measures the chemical composition of the product, controlling quality at several stages of production, while also determines the separation of materials in case of quality fault or for serving special industrial quality specifications. By this way, the novel instrument is capable to increase the efficiency of the extraction process, while in parallel the competitiveness of the related industry.

The system is based on laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and is capable to detect rapidly nearly all the elements of the periodic table. It also carries out a large number of measurements very quickly, with no need of sample preparation or use of chemical consumables.

The main parts of the system include a laser module, a camera, a spectrometer, other supporting optoelectronics equipment, plus an efficient software for analyzing data. The software is based on algorithms developed in-house.

The research group seeks industrial partners from the mineral sector or aerospace equipment manufacturers for technical cooperation agreement in regard of further developing and testing the system before they finally install it in their production lines.

The research group is part of a large physics -Y- materials research centre that performs high quality fundamental and applied scientific research focusing on two main research directions, i)laser science -Y- photonics and ii) materials -Y- devices science -Y- technology.
