Mobile device for automatic stacking of split pieces of wood or logs on pallets
An Austrian company has developed a mobile device for stacking wooden logs onto a pallet with raised sides. By using this procedure wood billets can be stacked automatically onto commercial pallets. The construction is built on a container frame. The patented device can be expanded to stacking logs in sacks and card boxes. Partners for further development, market introduction and commercial agreement with technical assistance are sought. The licensing or selling of the patent is possible.
The preparation of logs is a laborious and a time-consuming task with respect to time and manual labour input, as well as transportation to the site, where trunks are processed into firewood.

Firewood processors, combining a saw and a log splitter, enable the production of small firewood billets from whole tree trunks of a standard length. These then need to be stacked manually onto pallets. The currently available solutions for transporting piece goods cannot achieve axial alignment or are only appropriate for long pieces, such as planks or battens.

The Austrian company has therefore developed a mobile device for stacking (firewood) logs automatically onto a pallet with side-rails. The machine is installed in a container frame, which is mounted on a trailer vehicle.

The device comprises:
- a reception and guiding part in the first section,
- a pallet, the device for transversal transfer of logs and the stacking table in the second section and
- an automatic device for pallet packaging in the third section.

In the first section logs are aligned and transported with the separation belt towards the section where unaligned or surplus logs fall back onto the return plate with integrated roller-guides. These are then transferred back to the separation belt to be re-aligned perfectly on the pallet.

The treatment of the unit load (which can be of different surface structure) is facilitated through the device. This patented method enables automatic packaging of firewood in various forms, whether on pallets, into sacks or cardboard boxes.

The basic model is designed for 33 cm long split logs. Other lengths are possible. The construction is built on a container frame and can be assembled individually according to customer needs. The palletising units can be connected to a dry rotary drum, a hopper with sorting device, a cutting/splitting machine or after a quantity controlled band-conveyor.

The company is looking for partners for further development to series production, market introduction and also commercial agreement with technical assistance are sought. The granting of licences or the selling of the patent is possible.
Advantages and Innovations:
- fully automated process of manufacturing and packing of (fire)wood logs
- less space required for storage, transportation
- separation according to shape, size and surface condition of variable firewood pieces
- positioning of the unit load
- enable processing, palletizing and final packing of full pallets on the site
- individually adjustable charge (load intensity) of pallets
- low energy requirement - total connected load: 7.8 kW; required operating energy per hour: 2.7 kW
- revised logistic processing
- performance of the firewood palletizing line: ~ 6 cubic meter per hour
- expandable to stacking in sacks and cardboard boxes
