Very small gas flows and the detection of the leak flow rates through precise, mechanic sensors are right now only limited possible with barrel gas meters. The new measuring method solves this problem and allows an easy and precise determination of gas flows or leaks - however, without remarkable pressure fluctuations.
The research institute is searching for licensees.
Description:
A German research institute has developed a device for measurements of very small gas flows. The barrel gas meter consists of several chambers that are incorporated as spiral, parallel-staggered cavities in a massive cylinder. This cylinder is an encapsulated gas-proof and stored in a barrier fluid. An integrated floating body ensures a low-friction positioning.
Incoming gas is pushed into one of the spiral cavities. The incoming gas sets the barrel in rotation. When the rotation continues the end of the chamber, that is located on the other end of the barrel, reaches the liquid level and the gas can escape into the case or the atmosphere. This procedure is done consecutively with the, in the entrance inside stepping, chambers. The rotation is detected with further sensors.
In contrast to dry counters, e.g. diaphragm gas meters, no secondary losses occur on valves or measuring chamber borders. Therefore, it is possible to record leak flow rates.
The process is suitable for the measurement of very small gas volumes at a low pressure loss and low pressure variations. Application areas are slow reacting processes as they occur in bioreactors. Furthermore barrel gas meters are operated in testing laboratories.
The research institute is searching for licensees.

- the determination of lowest gas flows or crawl flow rates of less than 1ml/min.

The barrel gas meter enables yet unachieved gas flow determinations with a high measurement precision by an easy low cost solution.
