Electricity grid status measurements with controllable electrical consumers
Summary:
A German university developed a system to increase grid utilization and to avoid overcharging of a grid. Grid operators and operators of charging stations are sought for technical cooperation and license agreements.
Description:
The electrical power grid is undergoing a major transformation. Increasing numbers of decentralized feeders have been added in recent years and, in the future, there will be a large number of charging stations for electric vehicles that temporarily draw a large amount of electrical power from the power grid. In order to shorten charging times, the charging stations should charge the vehicles with the highest possible amount of power. However, overcharging jeopardizes the stability of the grid. The effect of the withdrawal of electricity on the rest of the grid must also be taken into account here, especially on those parts of the grid that are further away from the feed-in.

A German university developed a system to increase grid utilization. It consists of measuring points distributed over the grid. It uses several electrical consumers to check the state of the grid at regular intervals. To do this, the grid is loaded with different amounts of power and the grid impedance is determined from the measurement results. By exchanging the data with other measuring points, a comprehensive picture can be obtained of the current status of the electricity grid and, for example, the maximum charging power can be determined.

This solution is particularly interesting for grid operators and operators of charging stations, but can also be of great use to other operators of systems with a high electricity requirement.
The university thus offers license agreement to grid operators or operators of charging stations, who could integrate this solution. The invention is still in the development phase. A Technical cooperation agreement is therefore also conceivable to further develop the technology towards a prototype..
Advantages and Innovations:
This is new measurement procedure with measuring points distributed over the grid. The advantages are:

· Increases the utilization of distribution grids
· Increases grid stability
· Optimized power for charging stations
Stage of Development:
Under development/lab tested
IPs:
Patents granted
CommeR Statunts Regarding IPR Status:
The university is the holder of a patent application in Germany. International registrations are possible.

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
Potential partners should be experienced in power-grid operation or work closely with energy providers, e.g. EV charging station operators. The partnrers should be interested in implementing the technology in their processes.
Licensing is the target contract.

The TRL-2 (Technical Readiness Level) state implies the need for further development - from experimental proof of concept to a demonstration-ready prototype. Therefore, a technical cooperation agreement with the above partner is offered as part of a development project with the university where the partner, e.g. provides specifications and testing.
