Un instituto de investigación argentino especializado en impulsar la ciencia y tecnología ha desarrollado un electrodo para el tratamiento de tumores profundamente arraigados. El dispositivo consiste en un electrodo con una aguja central aislada rodeada por una placa conductora a cada lado. El electrodo se conecta a un electroporador y puede guiarse mediante ultrasonografía, escáner de CT o MRI. Esta tecnología permite tratar tumores de cualquier histología con muy buenos resultados. El instituto busca empresas interesadas en adquirir la tecnología y establecer acuerdos de licencia para su desarrollo y explotación, aunque está abierta a otros tipos de colaboración (fabricación e investigación).

Description:
Electrochemotherapy is a type of chemotherapy that allows delivery of non-permeant drugs to the cell interior.
Electrochemotherapy was used to treat a patient for the first time in 1991 at the Institute Gustave Roussy in France, Since then, more than 4000 patients were treated with electrochemotherapy all over the world (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK, USA).

Electrochemotherapy employs lower dosages of chemotherapeutic drugs than standard chemotherapy protocols; thus, the patient´s burden usually associated to chemotherapy is not present.

Electrochemotherapy is also used in veterinary oncology for a variety of tumors in dogs, cats, horses, and rabbits. There are centers in Brazil, France, Italy, Ireland, Slovenia, the UK and USA.

Recently, new electrochemotherapy modalities have been developed for treatment of internal tumors using surgical procedures, to gain access to the treatment area.
This invention is a device for deep seated tumor treatment. It consists of an electrode with a central needle isolated, surrounded with an electrical conductor plate on each side. The electrode is connected to an electroporator. For treatment, the electrode can be guided by ultrasonography, CT-scan or MRI (widely used medical procedures). Tumors can be located in natural ducts such us as nasal fossa, ear canals, or in other organs such us kidney, liver, lungs, brain, etc. Tumors of any histology can be treated with this technology with very good results.

Other applications of the technology:
· Ablation by electrolysis.
· Ablation by electroporation (includes reversible and irreversible electroporation)
· Gene transfection
