Description:
Over the past 10 years there has been a large increase in the use of pharmaceutical products, nano or microscopic particles, toxins and polymers which raise the risk of potential exposure to harmful materials. Currently methods for monitoring environmental toxicity are complex and time consuming requiring the implementation of a combination of actions such as process, emission, ambient, exposure and biological monitoring. Any monitoring system is a high cost practice especially when increasing numbers of samples and variables to be assessed.This UK company has developed technology that can rapidly identify and measure on the spot a wide variety of bio membrane-active and putative toxic substances which damage or penetrate living cell membranes, potentially leading to absorption by the organism.
By using a small credit card sized unit containing an artificial biological membrane sensor element, the solution can screen at an early stage substances for toxicity.This allows analysis of the compound toxicity by mimicking a real live bio membrane response. The technology has been validated against a range of known toxins to ensure reliability and it could potentially simplify and speedup the way environmental toxins are monitored thereby producing a clear cost reduction.
The potential applications could be aircraft cabin air monitoring systems, development of personal care products, safe and cost-effective minimisation of the exposure of workers and consumers.
