The SME is offering these compounds to companies and research organisations working in cell science under a license agreement, research cooperation or technical cooperation.
Description:
The study of cell signalling is an important aspect of research into diseases processes including cancer. The retinoids are an important class of signalling molecules involved in many cell processes. This makes them a vital target for research. However it is difficult to conduct laboratory studies using retinoids as they degrade quickly in light.

A UK-based SME has developed a library of novel retinoid derivatives that are stable in light, do not break down and have the biological activity of natural retinoids. Additionally these compounds are also intrinsically fluorescent. This means that the cellular localisation, compartmentalisation and transportation of these molecules can be directly imaged using confocal fluorescence microscopy without any additional steps. The library includes molecules with fluorescence but no biological activity providing experimental controls.

The library provides molecules with strong intrinsic fluorescence that can be imaged at concentration as low as 0.1µM. Localisation of these fluorescent retinoids has been observed within cell cultures, both 2D and 3D, as well as organ cultured tissue, bioengineered artificial tissue and zebra fish with testing on mouse models underway. These fluorescent retinoids can therefore be applied to a variety of study systems in cell biology.

The SME is offering kits of these fluorescent retinoid derivatives to companies and research organisations working in the field of cell biology with a particular view to develop these compounds further and assess them under different conditions. It is envisaged that these partnerships will take the form of a licensing agreement, research cooperation agreement or a technical cooperation agreement depending on the circumstances.

The retinoid derivatives are resistant to breakdown in light (photoisomerisation) and to oxidation.

The retinoid derivative molecules have strong intrinsic fluorescence, that can be imaged at concentrations as low as 0.1µM, enabling them to be visualised without any additional staining steps.

Molecules retain the biological activity of natural retinoids with a biologically inactive version available as a control or as a general fluorescence probe.

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
The UK SME is looking to partner with research organisations and companies working in the field of cell biology. The UK SME will supply partners with a kit containing three compounds for partners to use in their studies. The kit will contain a retinoid derivative with strong intrinsic fluorescence as well as a non-fluorescent analogue and a fluorescent analogue with no biological activity to act as controls. The UK SME will also provide other compounds from its library should a partner desire.

The UK SME would work with the partner in order to examine the performance of its compound library under different conditions with a view to improving their performance in future iterations. It is envisaged that the partnership would take the form of a licensing agreement, research cooperation agreement or a technical cooperation depending on the partner´s situation.
