Description:
Finnish company is offering its know how and proven concept for utilizing biomass combustion by-products in various applications. Company is established in 1994 and specialized on special construction and building materials, produces, imports, modifies and sells a variety of products and solutions for demanding construction. The company is an expert in the fields of cement chemistry, alkali activated materials, ash chemistry, challenging construction environments, plaster and mortar.

The company´s R-Y-D division is internationally well-known actor within the field of ashes. Their specialization is in the ashes from biomass combustion. The company takes part regularly in different research activities involving different ash producers. Among the company´s notable partners are Ecolan, a company specializing in making forest fertilizers from ash and Paroc, a mineral wool company. The company has had several projects related to development of ashes for use in soil stabilization and related applications. They have also built a large knowledge base for the utilization of ashes and slags. Various applications, where company´s mechanically or chemically treated ashes have been used in pilot to semi-industrial scale, include:

· Industrial raw materials for construction industry
· Light aggregates
· Fertilizers
· Light construction elements
· Soil construction
· 0-cement applications
· Water purification.

The company possesses crushing, grinding, sieving and mixing equipment. Their R-Y-D department is just outside of Turku, where they have access to high class laboratory and instruments readily available, such as: high temperature ovens, FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), MP-AES (Microwave Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy) for metal analytics, stereomicroscopes and software for image analysis. The laboratory is also equipped with standard equipment for hydrothermal processing. The company is specialized in semi-adiabatic calorimetry for studying the hydration processes of binder materials. The company´s material processing unit is based on mechanochemical activation. They have a range of different mills and crushers for processing industrial feedstocks to activated binders.

The company is starting to expand its operations abroad and for this reason they are looking for technology partnerships. To the partnership, Finnish company would bring its expertise in utilizing and processing ash side streams from bioenergy production. An ideal partner could be a bio fuel power plant operator, a company providing waste management services for power plants or a company that would utilize ash by-products. The collaboration would start with a feasibility study on utilization of the particular type of ash in question. After mutually accepted results, the collaboration would continue in the form of a license agreement, where the Finnish company would take royalties or commissions per volume of treated ash (other options are also possible). The company is open also for EU or nationally funded R-Y-D project opportunities.
Advantages and Innovations:
The company has been the main technology providing partner in producing soil-stab cement from biomass ashes. Pilot production has been launched at 100 MW to 400 MW CHP plants utilizing biomass as energy source. The cement from biomass ashes reaches 30 MPa at 28d. The resulting cement has been successfully applied in stabilization of loamy soils in the Southern Finland. The company has a wide network of internationally known research industries and industrial partners in the field of construction chemistry and alkali activated materials.

Partner could be 1) a power plant operator, looking for alternatives to utilize its side streams, 2) a logistics company, which already provides services for ash producers and potential end users, or 3) a waste treatment facility. The collaboration would for example start with a feasibility study and if sustainable use cases and treatment methods are identified, the collaboration would continue with license agreement. The licensing options are flexible and could be for example based on treated volume of ashes.
