A Lithuanian company which operates in construction and waste management areas offers a novel technology to recycle waste tyres. Almost every country has large stockpiles of old and used tyres that are taking up a lot of territory and polluting the environment.
The offered technology is based on steam-thermolysis decomposition of rubber waste products. Thermal decomposition of rubber, in the steam environment, proceeds on the re-synthesis polycatalyst scheme (decomposition of high-molecular organic substances), the process is similar to the well-known pyrolysis method. This technological process is much more environmentally friendly due to the exclusion of toxic gases that are dissolved in the reactor. Decomposition of waste tire occurs at a rather low temperature and pressure that fully excludes the highly toxic compounds. The rubber, when heated, separates into volatile (gaseous) and solid products (black carbon). During the cooling cycle volatile products in the heat-changer will condensate into liquid. The left over uncondensed gas is used in the running of the plant. The re-synthesis proceeds in such a way that there are no secondary reactions between components of volatile products and the suppressed toxic materials. The overall process can be described as a closed cycle. All emissions are environmentally friendly and from health and environmental points of view, the whole process could be equated with that of operating a restaurant.
The recovered liquid fraction corresponds to high-quality fuel oil, and also can be used in the pharmaceutical industry. Further processing will result in high-grade ship or diesel fuel.
The solid products consist of black carbon and steel. The percentage of carbon recovered will depend on the type of rubber, and whether it contains a high percentage of carbon without benzoperene. It can be used as a high-quality sorbent or as high-calorific fuel. The black carbon can be further processed into activated carbon with an unlimited commodity market, for use as a filler in the rubber industry or in the manufacture of plastics.
All end products, resulting from the recycling of waste tire, have properties of high quality and consequently they are in great demand in the energy market (fuel oil and black carbon). The steel residue, as metal scrap is ready for immediate recycling.
The companies which are dealing with hazardous waste management or recycle the waste tires in large quantities and would be interested in installing the offered technology in their premises are sought on a basis of a commercial agreement (to purchase the offered technology and deployment services) or license agreement (to become a licensed partner to use this technology).
