Non-destructive strength testing method for building materials
Summary:
An university from Latvia has developed mechanical load-bearing building material strength testing method without construction demolition. It can be used to determine the compressive strength of mineral building materials (concrete and ceramic) in building structures and components. University is looking for technical cooperation agreement.
Description:
The university from Latvia, involved in building material research, has developed a method for testing building materials without their destruction.
A non-destructive inspection techniques is known, where the concrete surface is being hit by a spherical device that is having a certain kinetic energy. Disadvantage for such a method is that it reflects only the design surface mechanical resistance, which may differ from the deepest layers of the design characteristics.
The method offered by university is where for the test material strength evaluation parameters are chosen the necessary amount of energy spent to drill into enclosed micro-volume (hole) of the material. This technique is used with electric drive arm rotation or drill, which is connected to electric meter.
The university is looking for technical cooperation agreement in order to provide the interested parties with know-how of the method.
Advantages and Innovations:
The invention relates to non-destructive strength testing methods for building materials. The method includes the successive steps of: drilling holes into samples of building material with use of rotation or percussion drilling machine and simultaneously determining the power consumption necessary for drilling; strength determination of building material by destructive failure of samples; obtaining a positive empiric correlation between the power consumption necessary for drilling and determined strength values of material; drilling control drillholes in structure material being tested and simultaneously determining the power consumption necessary for drilling; determining the actual strength of structure material being tested by use of correlation between power consumption and material strength values derived in testing process.; The application of said method makes strength determination of building materials simpler and faster and also increases the accuracy of testing.
