A Greek research team is developing a prototype methodology for calculating the lightning response of the basic component of any grounding system, the grounding electrode. The technology aims to describe current and voltage distribution along the electrode. The team seeks to collaborate with medium/large companies in the electricity industry involved in lightning response of the basic component of any grounding system or lighting protection industries, under a research or commercial agreement.
Description:
Incomplete knowledge of the transient response of grounding electrodes results in almost empirical formulation of lightning protection methods. Many attempts have therefore been made in the past for the calculation of this transient behaviour. They can be divided in two main categories: those based on frequency domain calculations with subsequent transformation of the solution into the time domain using inverse fast Fourier transformation (IFFT); and those based on the calculation of the solution directly in the time domain.

The Greek laboratory team is working on a novel method for the analytical calculation of the behavior of a grounding electrode under transient conditions. Telegraphy equations are used and analytical formulas are obtained for current and voltage distributions along the electrode.

A key element in the above aims has been that no particular assumptions need to be made regarding the energization source or the length of the electrode. Furthermore, a linearly increasing current at the start is considered, and special assumptions for the Laplace inversion have been made.

The main advantage of this method is that the lightning injection current is modeled as a typical double exponential function, although sinusoidal or other forms can be considered. Besides its generality, the method is characterized by accuracy, since it is based on closed form mathematical expressions. This leads to highly simplified solutions and allows very fast calculations with basic computing tools. Using this approach, results from the analytical calculation of the lightning response of horizontal grounding electrodes are included.

The research team is looking for co-operations with companies in the electricity industry that are involved in lightning response of the basic component of any grounding system, the grounding electrode. Also, it is addressed to industries making lightning protection systems.

The potential partners should be interested in:
- the acquisition of the suggested technology in order to improve their services by using this methodology under a commercial agreement with technical assistance (the Greek research team is offering to support the transfer of the technology)

- adopting the proposed solution or in developing a brand new solution relying on the offered technology under a research cooperation agreement (collaboration within EU collaborative programmes).
