Description:
Hydrogen is becoming a popular choice of fuel in combination with renewable electricity generation. Development of the hydrogen infrastructure is now being supported by a majority of European governments for a variety of reasons. Storage of intermittent renewable energy can be achieved by hydrogen. The hydrogen can be then used when convenient, in fuel cell vehicles and converted internal combustion vehicles as well as used to heat buildings using a hydrogen boiler.

A UK SME has ten years experience in fabricating, specifying and installing renewable energy solutions for small commercial customers. This includes non-domestic solar photovoltaic installations up to 1MW, 15 - 250kW wind turbines and innovative quad-directional inverter systems. With their experience, they have understood that in certain situations, to maximise the use of intermittent renewable energy, clever storage options are required. This hydrogen storage solution solves the problem of stranded or constrained generation. This occurs when a customer cannot install a system of the size that he would like because the grid would not take the load. Instead of installing a small system, the customer can maximise their investment by overspecifying the renewable source and then only feeding the maximium allowable power into the local grid. The excess power is then converted to hydrogen for use as described above.

The system requires a 20kW supply to work at full efficiency but can cope with fluctuating and intermittent power supply. The system can produce up to 9kg of hydrogen per day at 30bar pressure. This is sufficient for approximately 9 delivery vehicles needs. The system is modular so can be expanded with more hydrogen generation capacity and storage capacity if required.

The company is looking for partnerships across all territories with renewable energy installers for technical cooperation and integration into their renewable solutions.
