The Korean SME´s business structure focuses on plant factory, LED lighting, and cultivation technology. To further their research, they are in collaboration with other organizations to test for food safety, perform nutrient analyses, and maintain sales operations. Presently, the SME has expanded into the home and overseas market. The vision is to become a recognized plant factory system company in Korea that incorporates Korea´s agriculture, advanced technology, and green methods through creating controlled and customized plant facilities.
The technology of the plant factory has several components: the LED light system, the energy saving LED controller, the renewable energy mixture LED controller, environment control system, and the automatic control system.
The design process behind the LED light system was created to save energy and further cultivate the plants by controlling the LED pulse, wavelength, brightness, and duty rate of the system. The pulse is controlled by an on/off setting affecting the duty cycle when the light is on or off. This saves energy by 25-50% because electric power consumption can be reduced by modifying the duty rate. The duty cycle is the comparison between when the light is on with the duration of the cycle. In this case:
At wavelength of 25% duty time, the LED light on is 100 microseconds and off is 300 microseconds. Compared to having the light on nonstop (100% duty time), this function has a 50% energy saving effect. At wavelength of 50% duty time, both the LED light on and off is 200 microseconds. This method has a 29% energy saving effect.
The room environment is controlled by temperature, humidity, light speed, radiation intensity, time, nutrients, water supply, and amount of available carbon dioxide.
The business plan for this SME involves the commercialization of the plant factory, development of a hi-tech plant factory system, and global R-Y-D project. SME´s future plan seeks to continue research and development of smart plant factories. Their collaboration business model for the global market includes four established institutions.
