Description:
The Russian enterprise of Sverdlovsk region specializes in the field of scientific research and development, deals with the problem of increase of service life of copper water-cooled plates and tubes of molds, used in the process of casting steel. The company was founded in 2012.

When casting steel the crystallizer is one of the most important zone. The copper mold walls rather quickly go out of service. It is necessary to stop the process of casting steel and repair the mold, mechanically treat its surface, so that it becomes smooth and free of damaged areas. After a number of such repair procedures, the working layer is thinned to such an extent that the crystallizer becomes unusable and disposed of. Existing technologies of application of various protective coatings (electrolytic, gas-thermal etc.) allow increasing the resistance of copper plates and molds, but after 10-15 cycles of machining the copper layer on the plate erases and the plate should be utilized.

Specialists of the company have developed and are ready to introduce a unique innovative technology for the restoration of the copper layer of tubes and plates of molds for electro-slag-remelting and continuous casting machines by electrolytic deposition. The method is based on the process of galvanization. Due to the use of a number of know-how the company achieves two goals: the absence of a transition zone between the main layer and the layer being deposited; the ability to restore the layer to 50-60 mm.
The process of recovery of each copper product is carried out on specially designed units. For each size of a mold, a separate unit is made. The main parts of the units will be manufactured at the enterprises of Sverdlovsk region. Assembly, commissioning, and start-up is carried out by the company. Taking into account the machining, the thickness of the layer to be restored can be from 3 to 28 mm. The time to restore of 1 mm of the copper layer varies depending on the conditions from 6 to 24-30 hours.

All tests were carried out, an experimental and industrial model of copper layer reduction units were created. The first crystallizer for electro-slag-remelting was restored; melting was carried out at one metallurgical enterprise.

The company is looking for partners abroad from steelmaking industry. Under the services agreement, the company offers its technology to be applied to the partner´s steel casting works. The expected result for the Russian company is profit making, for a foreign partner - the restoration of products at low costs, as well as the possibility to extend the service life of molds.

The company offers the technology that does not involve the application of a protective layer, but the restoration of the working body of the copper crystallizer to the original one. Thus, the crystallizer can serve for a very long time and will not be required for disposal.

Advantages and Innovations:
- Direct costs for manufacturing of the mold by the offered technology are 15-25% of the cost of a similar new equipment depending on its configuration. It becomes possible, due to a significant difference in the cost of the finished product and the cost of copper scrap, from which the molds are made.
- Low unit cost of production is ensured by a lower cost of applied equipment, than at the classical production by casting and forging, and also due to the fact that energy-consuming processes are avoided. The technological process does not require the participation of highly qualified specialists at all stages are simple and automated.
- Possibility to repair the crystallizer, which is subject to write-off due to wear and tear.
The technology has nothing to do with the application of various protective coatings (Ni, Cr, etc.): the copper of the crystallizer (mold) itself is restored, and no protective layer is applied.
- Most of the tubes and plates of the molds are made of copper M1. Restorable lay by applying the offered technology has the type M00 (pure or cathode copper). Therefore, such important parameters as hardness and thermal conductivity of the restored layer is much higher than that of the plate (tube) of M1. In view of this, the restored plate (tube) according to the technology will serve much longer than the old one. The method is based on the process of galvanostat - the application of metal coatings on surfaces of metal products by electrolytic deposition.
- Specialists of the enterprise have developed and are ready to introduce a unique innovative technology of restoration of a copper layer of tubes and plates of molds for electro-slag-remelting and continuous casting machines of electrolytic deposition method. All tests were carried out, experimental and industrial-scale models of installations for the restoration of the copper layer.
