Una pyme austríaca ha desarrollado un fertilizante natural conforme a las normas alimentarias y la DSMZ (colección alemana de microorganismos y cultivos celulares). Este fertilizante, que no incorpora componentes animales y es más efectivo que los productos competidores, mejora la estructura del suelo, produce humus y utiliza minerales de arcilla e ingredientes de maíz para almacenar minerales en el suelo. Gracias al proceso de degradación, el fertilizante libera lentamente los nutrientes, garantizando un suministro constante a las plantas. La empresa ha creado un sistema internacional de franquicias para producir y vender el producto a escala regional. Se buscan socios interesados en participar en este sistema internacional y establecer acuerdos de comercialización, licencia y franquicia.


Eco-friendly fertilizer for sustainable soil and humus production
An Austrian SME developed a natural fertilizer, complying with food standards and registered at DSMZ (German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures). The fertilizer does not include animal components and is more effective than competing products. The company build up an international franchise system to produce and sell the product on regional scales. Partners are sought to jointly set up the franchise system worldwide in form of commercial, license and franchise agreements.
Each year, 140 million tons of mineral fertilizers are put upon soils worldwide. Environmental impacts are huge. Greener alternatives have appeared on the market, but only with small local business focus. A large scale market penetration is still missing.

An Austrian company is aiming to change that. In an EU-funded project they created a new fertilizer, a 100% natural product, which improves the soil structure and forms humus. It is classified with food hygiene standards and no health risks are associated with it. Compared to other fertilizer, it is more effective, saving fertilizer and yielding a nature-cost-account advantage of 1:10 compared to synthetic compound fertilizers (NPK, Nitrogen/Phosphorous/Potassium), as proven by a university study. Artificial fertilizers force plants to absorb nutrients even though they are already saturated. Force-feeding damages plants and soil quality. As a result, soil compaction advances and prohibits further water absorption.

The novel fertilizer uses clay minerals and maize ingredients to store minerals in the soil. Due to the degradation process the fertilizer slowly releases nutrients in the soil, ensuring a steady and smooth supply of nutrients for plants. After the initial composting process and humification is completed, the soil and humus quality is increased sustainably.

Currently, three different types of products are on the market:
- lawn fertilizer
- fruit and vegetable fertilizer
- liquid fertilizer

The products are suitable for intended private gardeners, as well as for professionals in agriculture and horticulture. Since it complies with food hygiene standards, it is especially suitable for use in playgrounds, camping sites and other public spaces where children and animals are playing.

The goal is to establish a new international franchise brand. Currently there is one pilot plant in Austria, the next step is to set up a worldwide franchise system and additional plants in regions with increased demand. Partners are welcome to distribute the products as franchisee. The Austrian company offers extensive support for market trials and target group definition. In market studies the partners may observe and analyse the requirements of the specific region and set up a concept together.

As the franchise system is currently under development, potential partners can contribute to setting up the contracts as well as the framework of the system. In the first phase franchisees receive the products from the Austrian plant. In the second phase, small production plants can be set up alternatively to increase efficiency and avoid costly transport. The fertilizer is easy to produce, support and guidance will be provided by the Austrian company.

In Europe, the company is looking for franchisees that are interested in expanding their product range with the natural fertilizer. Outside of Europe additional partners are sought as franchisers in order to set up an own franchise network. The types of cooperation considered are license, franchise, and commercial agreements with technical assistance.

Sought are companies which produce eco-friendly materials connected to the agricultural or food sector. Experience with materials like organic fertilizers, maize derived bio plastic (food packaging) or the like would be best. A connection to potential regional fertilizer customers would be beneficial. Having strong territorial roots but be able to focus on expanding markets is preferred.

Task to be performed by the partner sought:
- Participate in the creation of an easily adaptable franchise model to produce and sell the fertilizer on a regional basis

- Insight in the management processes to construct the described model is favoured by the Austrian company.

- Initialize a regional community platform which will be developed into an international platform later on.
