Investigadores de una universidad española y la Agencia Espacial Francesa han desarrollado y obtenido la patente de un nuevo método para corregir disparidades geométricas en imágenes en 3D, mejorando la exactitud mediante la implementación de un algoritmo en la fase de procesamiento de la imagen. Tomando un par de imágenes estereoscópicas como punto de partida, que se han obtenido mediante el método clásico de suma de diferencia de cuadrados, el algoritmo diseñado mejora la exactitud y reduce el conocido efecto de adherencia. Se buscan empresas especializadas en procesamiento digital de imágenes para licenciar la patente o establecer acuerdos de investigación o cooperación técnica.

Summary:
Researchers from a Spanish university and the French space agency have developed and patented a new method for correcting the geometrical disparities in 3D images, improving their accuracy by implementing an algorithm in the image processing phase. Companies involved in the digital image processing interested in a patent license or in a research or technical cooperation agreement are being sought.
Description:
Taking a pair of stereo images as a starting point, which has been obtained from the classical sum of squared difference -SSD- block matching method, the designed algorithm improves its accuracy reducing the well-known fattening effect, which occurs especially along the edges of buildings and tiles due to the existence of geometrical disparities caused by the existence of different depths.

The adaptive algorithm consists on using a weighted SSD. The new-discovered weights have been mathematically proven to be optimal. The resulting computed disparity is mathematically proven to be the convolution of the real one with a fixed low pass filter. This means that with this new method the obtained disparity is well sampled, contrarily to all previous methods.

Some experiments have been taken on satellite images in cooperation with the French goverment space agency, but the method could be applicable on other sectors like medical imaging, photography, robotic vision or electron microscopy.
Advantages and Innovations:
Stereovision consists in finding the depth of a scene from several views of it. This is one of the central problems in computer vision, because it is based on the fact that differences of depth in a 3D scene create geometrical disparities between different views of the same scene if they are taken from different points of view.
The patented method corrects the geometrical disparities in these 3D images which improves their accuracy.
