Description:
The measurement of visual acuity (VA) is an essential part of the ophthalmologic examination. Current VA assessment methods such Snellen test, ETDRS (Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study) chart lacks consideration on a number of issues, such as VA for a different language, reading habit, word structures, etc. To address this challenge, an Automatic Quantitative Customized Vision measurement template generator (AQUIR) is proposed that will be able to cater the needs for people reading in different languages, and adaptable to individuals with different reading habits, educational backgrounds and familiarities with the text content.

The system is to generate acuity test charts from configurable, multiple-factor templates, which includes settings based on different languages and sparsities. The sparsity is defined based on the spacing between rows, words or characters, depending on the language. The templates are also customizable based on the educational level of the individual, and can be configured for myopic or presbyopic assessment.

This proposed AQUIR framework can automatically and dynamically generate a series of near vision test charts that can be customized based on an individual´s needs. Through the AQUIR framework, for a specific set of requirements, the series of generated charts will be compiled into a customized codebook. In this codebook, each page is generated using a specific language, content base, font, font size and choice of spacing between lines and characters or alphabets. A unique code is then used to represent the standardized VA measurement score.

The hospital is interested in establishing license agreements and research cooperation agreements with partner from the healthcare industry, such as an SME of any size to commercialise the technology, or with a research institute for further R-Y-D.
Advantages and Innovations:
Detection, diagnosis, and management of Myopia or Presbyopia have both clinical and social significance, as the need to read and work at near, intermediate or long distances is important in all industrialized societies. The goal of myopia or presbyopia management is to provide clear, comfortable, efficient binocular vision, mainly through optical correction.

AQUIR provides an automatic system to generate vision measurement templates, facilitate customized and quantitative and potentially standardized measurement for acuity needs. The codebook generated by AQUIR can cater for an individual´s specific needs and preferences, such as language, content familiarity, media, to allow a more context-specific VA measurement. This will allow better management of VA.

The state-of-the-art Visual Acuity tools are unable to handle the various configurations such as different languages, sparsities, font type and spacing, reading habits, familiarity, etc. and this proposed AQUIR system is designed to handle these drawbacks. This provides better accuracy in VA assessment for the customers. It could also be implemented as a portable visual assessment tool that runs on mobile devices.
