El departamento de química de un instituto de investigación polaco ha desarrollado un geocomposite absorbente de agua. Se trata de un método innovador de retención de agua en el suelo cuyo objetivo es mejorar el crecimiento de la vegetación y las plantas garantizando un nivel óptimo de hidratación. El geocomposite se basa en polímeros en forma de pellets de hidrogel que, en contacto con el agua, tienen la capacidad de absorberla y aumentan su volumen hasta 400 veces. El uso de esta tecnología contribuye a aumentar el volumen de las cosechas y ayuda a regular los recursos hídricos en las plantas en lugares o situaciones en los que las plantas están amenazadas por una escasez de agua. Se buscan socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos comerciales.

Summary:
R-Y-D institute from Poland has developed a water absorbing geocomposite. It´s an innovative method of retaining water in the soil, the role of which is to support vegetation and proper plant growth by ensuring optimal hydration level. Use of this technology contributes to the increase of crop volume and helps to regulate plant water planning in places or situations, when the plant is under a threat of deficiency of water. Institute is looking for a partner for commercial agreement.
Description:
Product was developed by the R-Y-D institute from the south-west of Poland, department of chemistry. Institute has a big experience in R-Y-D and also in cooperation with industry. In the developed geocomposite the scientists used polymers (in the form of hydrogel pellets), which, when in contact with water, absorb it and increase their volume up to 400 times. Pellets should be placed in the soil, close to the plant root system, where, if hydrated, they swell, grow, and create a kind of a water reservoir, from which a plant can absorb water, as needed. Hydrogel can absorb over dozen litters of water. When a plant uses the water stored in the hydrogel, gel´s volume decreases, but with the new water supply (due to precipitation or irrigation), hydrogel starts to collect the water again. Water is gradually released from the hydrogel, and it is only slightly lost due to e.g. evaporation, in comparison to the water stored in the soil only.Hydrogel maintains its properties for 3 years. After that it is decomposed in the process of biodegradation and is completely harmless to the environment. In this time plants should have developed a sufficiently strong root system so that they could absorb enough water from the soil without any additional support. Hydrogel can be replenished as needed, in order to continue performing its function.
It shall be highlighted that developed hydrogels do not lose their water absorbency property when exposed to ions present in the soil and artificial fertilizers. Hydrogels have been modified in a way allowing them to maintain their parameters in every usage conditions, which is not guaranteed in the case of industrial hydrogels present in the market, used in comparative research. Chemical modification of a developed result structure allowed also to enrich hydrogels with microelements and minerals, which additionally provide plant with nutrients and stimulate their growth. As a result geocomposites not only maintain a proper soil humidity, but also provide plants with valuable elements and nutrients.
Product and conducted research indicate that the use of geocomposites may significantly increase the efficiency of plant cultivation or breeding (even by several dozen percent), especially in the areas with possible water deficiency. It has a direct influence on the financial aspect of plant breeding, and allows for its introduction in places and conditions where is has been very difficult or even impossible so far. Scientists continue their research on chemical modifications of geocomposites (various functional groups) in order to optimize their properties and ensure a wide range of applications.
A developed product may be used in a widely defined plant production (including agriculture, fruit harvesting, tree, bush and flower nurseries, etc.) or in the process of plant maintenance and breeding (in gardens, parks, planted greenery and any other green areas), especially in places with possible water deficiency in the soil, or in soils where water is quickly lost as a result of e.g. evaporation or down hole drainage (e.g. in sand soils). Potential application of geocomposite can be found in the whole world, but especially in the areas, where plant production or maintenance of their proper irrigation level causes certain problems resulting from local climate (scarce precipitation, problems with finding water for plant irrigation), soil conditions, high costs of plant irrigation, or where the plants of high economic value are cultivated. Geocomposite will also meet the expectations in the area of plant protection in transport at huge distances in conditions making it impossible to water them.
Offered result is a technical documentation, know-how of geocomposite production, and scientists´ support in starting an industrial-scale production. Institute is looking for a partner for a commercial agreement with a technical assistance to produce hydrogel on a large scale and implement it on a market.
