An Italian «retro-innovation»: darkroom printing from digital photographies
Summary:
An Italian professional photographer has invented a technology, the «digital enlarger», to obtain high quality black and white photo printing from digital files, in the classic darkroom. The entire printing cycle is hand-made. The technology is useful for professional and amateur photographers, collectors as well as museums, archives, libraries and photo archives of all kind. The inventor looks for partners under services agreement.
Description:
An Italian professional photographer, photo printer and overall artisan for 30 years has invented a technology to obtain black and white printing from digital photos, in the classic darkroom. The invention allows to get as close as possible to a traditional black and white darkroom printing from a digital file.

*The innovation:
This invention has been ironically defined as a "retro innovation" by the inventor himself: a mix between analog and digital systems. He has revisited, modified and improved old and new processes. He has nevertheless introduced significant changes both mechanically and in the use of existing techniques for quality photo printing in the darkroom. The approach behind this is to exploit the best features of the analog and the digital photo techniques.

Black and white printing from digital photos in the darkroom produces real art photographies, with an ancient, professional touch - while simple, currently popular, inkjet printing is very similar to just transferring pixels into paper.

*The "digital enlarger":
Using silver gelatin paper and creating a «digital enlarger», this technology can project a digital file directly onto photographic paper, as if it came from a negative. This overcomes previous systems invented because they all required intermediate steps and used an old fashion technology (small device, small size printing allowed, low quality). The digital enlarger, on the contrary, can print from large format projections, it uses a 210 mm lens and a small crop factor; this allows to create blow-up photo sizes.

The entire printing cycle is hand-made. The inventor prepares one piece of paper at a time; he does not use automatic machines because he wants to have complete control over the whole process. Professional quality is the most important added value the inventor can bring when working on photo printing: his unique craftsmanship and art are part of his technical innovation.

Target users can be:
- professional and amateur photographers all over the world
- collectors
- museums
- archives
- libraries
- (historical) photo archives

The inventor offers his know-how under services agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
Printing on traditional light-sensitive paper gives best results in terms of:
- simplified process
- high quality
- manual photographic process
- know-how used
- durability of the final printed photo (designed to have a longer life)
- lower cost of the whole process

On the photo:
- consistent and neutral image tone (no colour cast)
- strong blacks and detailed highlights
- bright white base for stunning black and white photographs
- superb quality and durability
- entirely manual process to have a control over the whole process
