Description:
A Korean research laboratory is affiliated with a public enterprise. The laboratory is a central research institute in Korea which plays a pivotal role in the electric power industry. Over 50 years, the laboratory is developing and supplying technologies related to electricity. The laboratory is now considering to fulfill technological demands in electric power industry with developing technology in the new energy industry as a next growth engine in Korea.

The laboratory offers technology for examining pipelines by long-range microbore tube based on the guided wave principle. The purpose of the technology is to identify damage from inside or outside of the tube and a partial thinning condition of the pipe by using the principle of the Piezo-activated guided wave. In the fixed position, the technology enables the faster test of 200meter distance by signal exchange for one time. The technology strengthens the contact force outside of the tube by using tension springs. Furthermore, it is possible to analyze and evaluate in a stable way because of built-in sensors for guiding the operation.

There are several examples of application including demonstration case. The technology is applied to test pipes for firefighting and industrial water, boilers and reheat steam in power stations. Furthermore, it could be utilized to evaluate the condition of gas pipelines in several Korean gas and oil companies. It also supports the integrity assessment of equipment for renewable energy such as inspecting gantries for offshore wind power generators. Furthermore, the technology would be applied to the construction industry by testing integrity about underground pipelines including those under bridges.

The type of partnership would be based on commercialization with technical assistance, licensing, research cooperation and services agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
The aim of the technology is to solve the main drawbacks while enhancing the advantages of the existing way of pipe testing. Most microbore tube has small parameters (less than 60milimeters). This condition makes impossible to affix sensors so it is necessary to use other instruments for widening the gap in tubes in a forceful way. However, this technology facilitates the test with tubes which distance is more than 50milimeters as the size of equipment for detecting and measuring is less than 60 millimeters. Moreover, the test is bidirectional in long range by one operation. Therefore, the time and cost required could be cut into almost half comparing with general local examinations while increasing credibility of the test.
