Un instituto de investigación eslovaco con experiencia en química inorgánica ha desarrollado nuevos materiales de almacenamiento térmico basados en sales fundidas. Las sales líquidas fluoradas son un excelente medio de almacenamiento térmico a alta temperatura. El instituto ofrece mezclas fluoradas con propiedades específicas para almacenamiento térmico. Muchas otras propiedades, como presión de vapor, densidad, coeficiente de dilatación térmica y viscosidad, son también mejores que las de otros medios de almacenamiento. Las sales fluoradas son termodinámicamente estables a altas temperaturas con puntos de ebullición muy altos. La tecnología ofrecida puede emplearse en ensayos de corrosión de materiales para la construcción. El instituto de investigación busca socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos de financiación o servicio.

Description:
This research institute is one of the most respected and experienced research centres in Slovakia active in the field of inorganic chemistry. The institute is focused on basic research in the area of inorganic and bio-inorganic systems oriented to optimization and development of new materials and technological processes in the following branches of science: inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic technologies and materials, theoretical chemistry, nanotechnology.

The main subjects of the research are the following:
- Relations between composition, properties and structure of inorganic substances, mainly advanced ceramic materials, molten salt systems and hydrosilicates
- Thermodynamics of multicomponent systems
- Features and chemical reactions in inorganic systems, including interface of phases
- Development and application of theoretical and experimental methods for the determination of the structure and properties of matter.

This institute offers fluoride mixtures with exactly given properties for thermal storage. The institute examined especially physical and chemical properties of molten fluoride salts. Liquid fluoride salts are excellent high-temperature thermal storage media. Fluoride salt mixtures are preferred because of much lower melting points than those for single-component salts. Many other properties, such as vapour pressure, density, thermal expansion coefficient, and viscosity are more desirable opposite to so-far used storage media. Fluoride salts are thermodynamically stable at high temperatures with very high boiling points. Only their high corrosive activity makes them disadvantageous. To avoid corrosion, liquid-fluoride salts must be thermodynamically stable relative to the materials of construction; that is, the materials of construction must be chemically noble relative to the salts. This requirement is necessary because fluoride salts are agents that rapidly dissolve protective layers of a lot of construction materials based on metals, metal alloys, metal oxides, thus limiting the choice to highly thermodynamically stable fluoride salts.

Knowledge of phase equilibria and other characteristics of molten salts is essential for the calculation of the concentration within the electrochemical study of molten niobium systems, as well as the kinetics of ongoing processes. This physico-chemical analysis of fluoride melt systems is needed for the electrolytic separation of silicon for photovoltaic applications.

The institute is looking for partners to cooperate with via financial agreement (the institute needs financing of the technology and offers the project to investors) or via services agreement (services connected to the use of developed technology in praxis are offered). The offered technology could be used e.g. in corrosion testing on construction materials or it could easily find the usage in specific applications of heat storage for domestic use and middle-size companies, etc.
