Description:
Smart factories, the modern automotive industry, and the Internet of Things (IoT) drastically increase the market for embedded systems. While the individual hardware of each system is still an important design aspect, more and more investments are funneled into tailored and complex software running these devices. Despite substantial costs to develop specialized software, most systems feature no or only weak protection against analysis. This leaves the intellectual property and trade secrets contained in the software as data and algorithms unprotected against analysis by competitors.

Dangers of reverse engineering include product piracy, unauthorized production of plagiarisms, the loss of technology advantage, identification and exploitation of software weaknesses, unintended unlock of additional features and misappropriation as well as unwanted third party compatibility.

Considering this and the fact that in modern embedded systems the software creates an increasing share of the product value, it is of highest priority to secure it against reverse engineering and product piracy.

A German spin-off company from a leading institute for IT security tackles the challenge and offers effective protection with innovative technology. Their solution starts where conventional methods such as fuse bits, non-disclosure agreement (NDAs), and patents end. They protect the firmware directly, securing it in the supply chain and even once it is extracted from the microcontroller. They achieve this protection with an innovative combination of Platform Security and state-of-the-art Code Protection methods tailored to the embedded environment.

Utilizing a two step approach their protection software first analyzes the specific properties of the software to be protected. The following transformation passes utilizes the gathered information to achieve a high level of protection. At the same time the company provides for a seamless integration into the product development cycle as a compiler extension. In addition to the effective protection their solution is characterized by compatibility with existing hardware and with low-power applications as well as by a low performance overhead.

Applications are in Internet of Things (IoT), automotive industry, medical and consumer industry. Partners are sought from these industries for licensing to implement the solution or for commercial agreements with technical assistance, where the German company would devise and adjust the tailor-made solutions for the respective application. Advantages and Innovations:
Common readout protections like lock bits are not sufficient and Asian companies bypass them commercially. Hardware security modules (HSMs) and secure boot do not provide a strong firmware protection either, because by design they have to decrypt the whole firmware at boot time.

The German company´s protection is applied to the firmware directly and ensures its security in the supply chain, in the product´s memory and even during code execution.

The novel combination of platform security, state-of-the-art code protection and utilization of security features in the existing hardware achieves stronger security properties while maintaining functional safety and real-time requirements.
