La aplicación es capaz de aislar e identificar las manos del usuario, identificar y sustraer los detalles de inmovilidad en el entorno y hacer un seguimiento del movimiento de las manos, palmas y dedos. La empresa busca socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos comerciales con asistencia técnica para integrar la solución en aplicaciones sanitarias existentes y acuerdos de cooperación técnica e I+D para mejorar y aplicar la tecnología en otros sectores.


A gesture interface to replace mouse and keyboard in dentistry and surgery applications
A small Italian software and consultancy company, operating since 1991 particularly in the health sector, has prototyped a low-cost gesture recognition interface using available webcams to replace mouse and keyboard in aseptic environments, e.g. dentistry or surgery. The company is interested in commercial agreements with technical assistance to integrate the solution in existing health applications and in technical or R-Y-D agreements for further improvements or extensions to other sectors.
A small Italian company, founded in 1991 by IT specialists, has consolidated over the years a specific experience in the development of dedicated software solutions and technical assistance in the health sector. The company is also an accredited technical partner of major national IT companies.

As a result of an R-Y-D project carried out with health operators under a regional programme, the company has developed a prototype of a Touchless User Interface (TUI), to replace mouse and keyboard in conditions in which physical contact is deprecated as when, for example, dentists or surgeons are operating on a patient and need to interact with a computer application to recall / modify any information.

The protoype uses an infrared 3D webcam, commercially available at low cost, using its development toolkit to apply complex recognition algorithms. The application is able to isolate and identify the users´ hands, identify and "subctract" the motionless details in the background (obtaining an homogeneous setting), and trace the moving hands, palms and fingers.
The most common mouse and keyboard gestures (such as point, click, double click, open, drag, scroll, press key, etc.) are mapped on the position and movements of hand (palm, fist) and fingers.

The prototype is developed in Java and the technique has been tested on a software for the management of a dental practice that appears to be a promising field of application, given the increasing need for dentists to handle seamlessly their patients´ information.

The integration of such a touchless user interface on common applications in the professional medical area might be an interesting added value at a low cost. Furthermore, the solution could be applied also in other environments, such as pastry making, workshop, etc.

According to its usual business model, the company is looking for industrial partners - i.e. tipically, software houses in the medical sector - that are already active on a specific market (e.g. software for dentistry, surgery, etc.) to transfer the solution and possibly cooperate on the personalisation needed for the specific application and/or sector, under a commercial agreement with technical assistance. This might imply the identification of different gestures or shortcuts to the software functions and tuning for different working conditions (distance, light, etc.). Clearly, the company is open to collaborate in other applicative sectors other than the medical one.

Furthermore, the company is interested in further developments, in terms of solution of new issues and higher performance, by means of technical collaborations with companies with complementary competencies.

Given its past experience, the company is able to contribute to collaborative R-Y-D projects promoted by other hi-tech companies and research centres, for the development of applicative cases and prototypes.
