Inventors of a technology that maximises energy generated by deep offshore wind turbines seek Financial Agreement to develop the technology
Summary:
A Maltese mechanical engineer, designer of an interface that maximises the energy generated by deep sea offshore wind turbines thereby increasing generation efficiency and reducing loads on power stations particularly in areas with warm climatic conditions, seeks a financial agreement with investors and collaborators to construct full scale prototype and prepare for eventual commercialisation.
Description:
A Maltese inventor has developed an interface that addresses the unpredictable and variable input from offshore wind turbines. To date, this is a big issue with offshore wind turbines supplying conventional electrical grids.

The invented interface converts the input into an output that is smooth and predictable.

The extra energy is stored for times when there is not enough being produced by using compressed air and water, making the technology clean and suitable for very large scale systems.

The invention uses a well-established hydro-pneumatic accumulator technology and a renewable energy system positioned on a floating support structure with an integrated floating air chamber designed to hold compressed air and to provide necessary buoyancy to the floating structure.

The platform is further supported by a sea-bottom mounted structure, configured to hold compressed air and the deep sea water (DSW) to store the DSW under pressure of the compressed air.

The floating air chamber is pneumatically connected with the sea-bottom accumulator chamber to pressurize the hydro-pneumatic energy storage system with compressed air. The pressurised cold deep sea water is then transported to shore for the purposes of generating electricity and cooling.

The inventors seek financial investment by a company in a related field so as to obtain the resources required to fully develop the technology and progress with its eventual commercialisation.
Advantages and Innovations:
The design can be adapted to wave, tidal and floating PV installations and is not restricted to wind turbines,

The design makes use of existing infrastructure and maximizes the benefits from offshore renewable energy installations - making wind energy a more feasible renewable energy option.

The design exploreS the advantages offered by hydraulic power transmission in the context of wind energy over gearbox-equipped wind turbines.

The design offers a solution to certain challenges faced in storage in deep sea conditions and transportation to the shore of offshore renewable energy.

The key potential applications for this technology are to maximse the energy supply to the grid from offshore wind turbines, reduce loads on local power stations for cooling in coastal cities and tourist resorts and reduces loads to power offshore LNG processing plants.

The system ideal for sites with low speed wind / deep water / warm climate.
