On-site water diagnostic kit to detect microbiological contamination
A UK South West SME with expertise in water quality has developed an on-site diagnostic water testing system which accurately and reliably detects and quantifies E coli contamination in water. It is in an advanced testing and prototyping phase, with batch production tooling completed and assembly processes in place. The company seeks partners to support further research -Y- development and launch the technology on global markets based on a joint-venture, licence or financial agreement.
Clean water is an essential resource and water supplies require regular and accurate testing. Contaminated water impacts on human and animal health and environmental degradation. Water testing is necessary and compulsory for many industries and sectors worldwide. It is an expensive requirement, with microbiological water testing being carried out by private or government-owned laboratories who provide a collect, test and report service for water samples. In the UK and Europe the time to result (TTR) is on average between 2-3 days and costs -Y-euro;10--Y-euro;15 per sample. In developing countries the TTR can be much longer and laboratory standards are variable.

The developed water diagnostic kit enables on-site testing and gives a quantitative result in 18 hours. The system is easy to use and requires no technical expertise. The kit is based on the ISO approved ´Most Probable Number´ (MPN) method. A water sample is collected in the proprietary diagnostic kit, a specialised reagent is added and the kit is then placed into the system unit. The diagnostic kit splits the water sample into sub samples for the MPN analysis. The chambers on the lid of the diagnostic kit present an easy to read display under the UV illumination in the system unit. After reading the result, the samples are automatically pasteurised to facilitate safe disposal.

Main markets for application are:
Horticulture - as consumer pressure pushes for higher quality and extra safeguards, on-site testing will allow growers to quickly investigate short term changes in water quality (e.g. at times of heavy rainfall) and demonstrate consistently high standards which will reduce outbreaks of gastrointestinal disease and associated financial and reputational costs to supermarkets and their suppliers.

Shipping - merchant, naval and cruise ships require a potable supply of drinking water for crews and passengers. Currently testing is only possible when in harbour. On-site testing will enable daily monitoring and will reduce the risk of and outbreaks of disease.

Monitoring of environmental waters and private / community supplies - in the EU and developing countries water sources are often in remote, rural locations that are difficult to access. On-site testing which can be carried out by non technical staff will allow for more regular testing, improve water quality, reduce transport and laboratory costs and consequential costs incurred through delayed detection.

Field and laboratory trials have demonstrated very good results with positive user feedback. The system has attracted UK and international interest from horticulture, shipping and community water suppliers.
