Un grupo de investigación de una universidad italiana ha desarrollado una nueva solución lab-on-a-chip para evaluar la eficacia de nuevos inhibidores de agregados amiloides para el tratamiento de enfermedades degenerativas que afectan al sistema nervioso central, como enfermedades de Alzheimer y Parkinson. Esta nueva solución utiliza espectroscopía de impedancia eléctrica y permite analizar la cinética de la agregación mediante una cantidad limitada de proteínas. El grupo de investigación busca socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos de investigación o cooperación técnica para desarrollar conjuntamente y comercializar la solución.

Summary:
A research group from an Italian university developed a novel lab-on-a-chip solution to assess the efficacy of new amyloid aggregation inhibitors for the treatment of degenerative diseases that involve the central nervous system, such as Alzheimer´s and Parkinson´s. It uses electric impedance spectroscopy and makes it possible to analyze aggregation kinetics using a limited quantity of proteins. Looking for partners for research or technical agreement for co-development and commercialisation.
Description:
The proposed technology relies on electric impedance spectroscopy and makes it possible to analyze aggregation kinetics using a limited quantity of proteins (which have very high costs) and without the need for contrast media.
The device consists of an apparatus comprising an LCR meter (which analyses Inductance (L), Capacitance (C), and Resistance (R)), to measure impedence, a calculator control panel that can automatically pilot the instrument, and a microfluidic device consisting of a glass slide with interlocking electrodes and a removable, hermetically-sealed tank in polydimethylsiloxane where the solution is stored during the experiment.
The developing research team, specialised in electronic engineering, sensors and microactuators for biotech applications, is currently looking to further develop the solution and is searching for industrial partners for co-development, testing, engineering and industrialisation of the technology. Research and technical cooperation agreements are considered.
Advantages and Innovations:
Compared to competing techynologies the proposed solution:
- makes it possible to measure aggregation kinetics without the need for contrast molecules
- cuts costs related to instruments
- for each measurement, it requires only one-tenth of the proteins required by the fluorometric method, drastically cutting costs (600 -Y-euro;/mg protein).
The solution is of interest for operators in the segment of drug discovery and efficacy assessment of new pharmaceuticals for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (mainly Alzheimer´s, Parkinson´s, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - ALS, and Huntingon´s).
