Un laboratorio italiano especializado en máquinas-herramientas y sistemas de producción ha adquirido competencias avanzadas en rellenar estructuras huecas con espumas metálicas. Estas espumas metálicas ofrecen ventajas en términos de reducción de costes, amplio abanico de aplicaciones, amortiguación, resistencia a altas temperaturas, peso ligero y rigidez dinámica. Las espumas y esponjas metálicas son materiales heterogéneos formados por una matriz metálica en 3D que contiene al menos un volumen de poros del 70%. Estas espumas se utilizan en los sectores de automoción (fabricación de coches, tranvías y componentes estructurales de máquinas-herramientas) y construcción (puertas cortafuegos, tabiques y falsos techos). El laboratorio busca socios industriales con el fin de establecer acuerdos de servicio y cooperación en materia de investigación.

These have several advantages in terms of cost reduction, extensive applications, shock absorption, resistance to high temperatures, light weight, dynamic stiffness.

The laboratory seeks services agreement with industrial partners facing limitations in machine tools; also research cooperation agreement is of interest to progress in R-Y-D.
Description:
An Italian important laboratory for applied research in the field
of machine tools and production systems is active since 2005. Among its services, it produces metal and hybrid foams (metal/polymer foam) as well as metal sponges. The laboratory is also developing the interaction between core and skin in metal foams sandwiches.

Metal foams and metal sponges are both heterogeneous materials formed by a 3D metal matrix containing at least 70% volume of pores. They can be closed (foams) or open cell materials (sponges). Foams are known to have several interesting sets of physical and mechanical properties, such as: high stiffness combined with a low specific weight; high gas permeability combined with low thermal conductivity.

Aluminium is also used in metal foams. It is especially useful in AFS (aluminium foam sandwiches): sandwich panels with aluminium skins. The AFS configuration allows to design components with a good ratio between bending stiffness and weight, with the advantage of providing good vibration and noise damping. Another advantage is shock absorption which foams produce when filling a hollow structure. Its limited thermal conductivity with good resistance to high temperatures makes it useful also for the construction field
Furthermore, costs are usually lower than traditional aluminium structures.

*Industrial applications:
AFS is especially useful in the:
- automotive sector: production of cars, trams and machine tools structural components (aluminium foams offers lightweight components without compromising comfort, as well as a shock absorption capacity);
- building and construction field: fire doors, false ceilings and partition walls fireproof (the good damping of vibrations and noise is combined with a limited thermal conductivity with good resistance to high temperatures, flame and corrosion);

Sandwich panels steel (aluminium foam and steel) is suitable for:
- the production of structural components: upper beams for construction equipment, cranes, telescopic booms (exploiting greater stiffness and lighter weight);
- drilling and milling machine tools (products filled with foam have higher frequencies than traditional components);

The Italian laboratory is interested in finding industry partners facing structural vibrations problems and limitations in machine tools in their specific area of activity and for which the expertise of developing new performing solutions would be of interest.
Collaboration could be envisaged under the form of services agreement. At the same time, the Italian laboratory is very active in applied research and is willing to work on exploratory research with international partners. A technical or research cooperation agreement is envisaged with industry and academic partners for these technological studies to perform together.
